Greetings, Challengers

This is an emergency message to address certain complaints that the Kalos League has been receiving.
As many of you know, one of your fellow challengers is currently under arrest for a violent crime. Normally this would be grounds for disqualification, but that would only be the case if this challenger had been tried and found guilty, which has not yet happened. This means that said accused challenger will remain a challenger, which has caused many other challengers to be concerned for their safety.
We would like to remind everyone that you are not allowed to drop your participation without justified reasoning and this does not qualify.
The League does recognize that this is an issue that cannot go unresolved, so we have certain mandates in place. The accused challenger will be secured with specialized restraints provided by Lysandre Labs and a high-level Gym Monitor has been appointed as an escort for the accused. The League will also accept responsibility for any harm caused by the accused to any other challenger.
Please trust that we have your safety as our top priority.
You may contact the Kalos League for any further questions.

Thank you for participating in this Gym Challenge season.

'Ello
I am Uberle
And welcome to this written run of mine
I've greatly enjoyed what I've been able to create so far, and I hope you do as well.

So rules are standard
1. Faint=death
2. Only the first encounter
3. Name everything

This is randomized, so quick summary
Encounters and NPC mons are completely random
Important trainers, gym leaders rivals, ect, have a full team of six
Also any NCP mon level 35 or above will be fully evolved

With all that cleared out of the way, let us begin.

“Here’s the file.”
Elly took the papers from the Boldore guard. She thought it would be bigger, but there were only around a dozen pages in the report. However, paper can only tell so much about a person, and she was here for a visit not a reading. “Take me to him.” She asked the guard.
“Ma’am, I don’t think-”
“Several people have told me what they thought, but I'm listening to my own thoughts instead. He’s been successfully detained hasn’t he? He should pose no threat under the facility’s supervision, correct?”
“No, of course not-”
“So take me to him.” She had made up her mind and there was no reason to deny her, so the guard only nodded and allowed her to follow. She had to tuck her wings in uncomfortably to fit in the narrow hallways, but this visit wasn’t going to be long anyway. While they walked, Elly took a look at what few papers she was given. This was a one-of-a-kind case, and it just so happened that she wasn’t occupied with anything else when it was received. A gym challenger accused of murder. The league did have a rule against criminals participating, but this one technically wasn’t one yet. The Kalos League had more red tape than the International Police when concerning a challenger dropping out, so in he got to stay. So many challengers meant a limited number allowed each year, and if you got in nothing could get you out, short of a physical injury that made participating impossible. Elly flipped to the police report of the arrest and one thing caught her eye immediately. Well two things, but the first one she could ask the challenger himself about. “Why does the challenger’s species have a question mark next to it?” She pointed to the line on the paper.

Species: Ditto (?)

“Oh, that.” The guard spoke with slight uncertainty. “He’s shown that he’s capable of replicating the abilities of other Gijinka, even without the original present. It seems that his mimicry is permanent and he can recall the moves at any time.”
“Then what’s keeping him from attacking with whatever is useful at the moment?”
“Jump forward a couple pages.” She shuffled through and found what he meant. Cuffs that were made to contain a Gijinka’s power. With these the challenger was restricted to the number of moves he could use as dictated by the handler. So this would be her responsibility in a couple days. Great, just great. “Here he is.” The guard stopped in front of an iron door. No different from any of the others Elly had passed on her way here, but then again, these inhibitors would mean that he’s no different from any other inmate.
“Open it.” She stood back as the guard unlocked the door and opened it for her. She stood behind the threshold to look at the figure lying on the bed, his hands holding a mask in place. The black cuffs were clearly visible on his wrists. After a second, a voice that sounded like it belonged to a lifelong smoker rattled out.
“I can break these cuffs.” The guard started to close the door in panic, but Elly grabbed his arm to stop him and walked inside the cell, holding the report out for the prisoner to see.
“Is this really your name?” The mouth of the mask, a wicked jagged toothed grin, glowed green as he spoke.
“I am Freak, yes.”

He heard two pairs of footsteps approaching. One definitely belonged to that Boldore guard, but the other was unfamiliar. Someone new, someone light. Well lighter, the other one was a literal rock mon after all. He adjusted his mask as the door opened. “I can break these cuffs,” There were sounds of a scuffle, but the door remained open and someone stepped through. A Togekiss, had to be with that white skin dotted with red and blue markings, wings, and blue/white/red hair. She held up a piece of paper with His mugshot.
“Is this really your name?” Oh of course that was what she picked to focus on first. His name, always about the name, and never the crimes or the superpowers. Well being fair, He didn’t do the crimes and it seems everyone has superpowers here, so guess there wasn’t much else to look at.
“I am Freak, yes.”
“..... Freak.”
“That is what I ask to be called.”
“.... Ok then,” She said His name with a bit of skepticism, like she would play along but didn’t actually think that was what He was actually called. No one emotion stood out, so she hadn’t formed a proper opinion on Him yet. Ok so that’s what He’d be dealing with. Not full stick up ass, but still at a good halfway point. Someone who preferred to look at things herself and not just trust words on the paper. A small amount of bias, but it seemed that she suspected something wasn’t right with that report. A bit insulting that He got labeled a Ditto, but it was close enough. He stared at the Togekiss for a bit, taking more notes on the fairy. Goggles on head for high speed flying, so probably liked to move at her own pace. A wind breaker with a regular t-shirt underneath. Pretty large wingspan, she probably hated having to keep them folded in by their shifting. And lastly, cargo pants. He cocked His head to one side while He wondered what she could be storing in all those pockets. Then He turned His head the other way when His power’s passive kicked in and presented Him with the copied powers of the Togekiss.
“..... And you are... Gabrielle? Or is it pronounced the other way....”
“How do you-”
“Lonely Nature, not really the best, but not hindering anything important. OUCH, Hustle. RIP in peace Air Slash flinch hax.”
“Where in Giratina’s unholy domain did you crawl out from?”
“Hey, don’t bring Gira into this. The mon just wants to chill in their own dimension away from all you people.”
“What- I- Wha-” Gabrielle turned back to the guard who only shrugged. Garbeille probably thought she would try to talk to Him thinking he was just a common killer. Nothing is common about Him. He took great pride in that. She regained her composer quickly and looked at Him again with the expression of someone who only knew that they hated Him. Perfect. It was the only way to have any fun, make sure everyone knew what He was about and then work on things from there. It didn’t matter what anyone thought of Him. As long as it wasn’t thinking He was weak. If they thought that they would be proven very wrong very quickly.
“Sooooooooo you gonna be the one holding my leash?”
“.... I have been designated as your handler for your gym challenge. My job is-”
“To make sure I don’t have fun, I know. Look I am here, in these things, and currently being prosecuted for something I didn’t do. Seriously I have so much other stuff, but the bit you people double down on is the bit where I am innocent. Honestly it takes the fun out of things when I’m being punished for a bad I didn’t do.”
“Wait, what else have you done?”
“You got a millennium?”
“Ignore him. He says stuff like that all the time, but there’s no evidence of any of it.” That guard just had to ruin the fun. Not His fault if no one picked up on His confessions. Just another annoyance to be tolerated. But when it paid off in the utter confusion and chaos of emotions He sensed in Gabrielle, it reminded Him of why He puts up with it.
“Sooooooooooooooooo, got anything else?”
“.... I’ll talk more once we meet up to officially begin the challenge in a few days. In the meantime I recommend you prepare yourself. At the opening ceremony you’ll be getting a lot of negative press.”
She started making her way out of His cell as He let out a laugh.
“It’s all I ever get, Gabrielle!”
“It’s Elly.”
With a motion she had the guard close the door, leaving Him alone in the darkness with thoughts and demons.

What. In the name of Arceus. Was that? He knew everything about me so effortlessly. Does the file have anything on that?
Elly scanned through the report and noticed that the last page was a document written by Freak himself. In it he claimed to not be a Gijinka, but a Being with a superpower beyond anything like a normal ability. She read carefully, taking every piece of information and trying to sort it in her mind. Activated-Manual? Absolute Mimicry? Passive effect? She paused on the passive section. According to his own words, when Freak meets someone for the first time he automatically copies their powers and learns all their battle data and their name. “Oh don’t tell me you’re buying into that BS.” The guard had noticed what page she was on, and looked at her with concern.
“What- I wasn’t- I was just looking at everything. I need to know everything about him after all.”
“He’s crazy. That’s all you need to know.”
“He knew my name and battle data, how do you explain that?”
“He’s a Ditto. He probably has Imposter and copied you as soon as you entered. Why do you think he has that mask?”
“.... Yeah that makes sense.”
“He’s just a killer. A very eccentric one, but still one. Don’t let him get into your head.”
“... Sure.” She didn’t really buy that. Battle data was one thing, but name and nature? There’s no way he could have known about any of that unless someone told him, and she only got his case two days ago. Who would’ve told him? There’s no way he had any allies, he’s too unstable for that. He’s just a monster, plain and simple. And soon she would be the only thing keeping him in check.

What a day to think about murder. Typically not something He would pay mind to, but this was an exception. A Seviper, electrocuted to a crisp and with several body parts missing. Her tail, an eye, and even a fang ripped out too. While He had the basic truth on his side, there were just a few points against him. His stupid kickback being one of the main ones. Able to use the powers of anyone He meets with the condition that should said owner of copied powers die, all memories are lost so even if He did meet the dearly departed, He wouldn't know. Also the um.. Whole.. Cameras that caught someone who looked quite a lot like Him around the place where the Seviper worked business. The argument was that it had to be Him because a Ditto can’t mimic the appearance of another non-transformed Ditto which would be easily debunked if anyone had just accepted that HE WASN’T A FUCKING DITTO!
Mistaken identities aside, He should count Himself lucky that the league was a nightmare of bureaucracy which allowed Him to fight the gyms. Or ‘participate in the grand Kalos league challenge’ as those suits put it. Oh the irony of the same guys who slammed these fucking cuffs on Him telling Him He should be thankful He was allowed to leave His cell and use His power. He’s still not sure why the cuffs worked on Him. It made sense that they restricted some of His abilities, after all he’s been loaded upon Gijinka powers, so the cuffs obviously would stop those, but He’s still got other powers from other Beings, so why were those restricted as well? Who the hell made these fucking cuffs?! He held them up to His face, only the dim green light from His mask's eyes illuminating them. Black bands that covered the three inches below His wrists while only being about half an inch thick. An interesting balance of being noticeable while also not making putting on shirts a massive pain. Very carefully made to do what they do with maximum efficiency and minimum irritation, which is curious. If they were created to hold prisoners, comfort shouldn’t be a priority. So who made them, and why?

The grieving of the Seviper has finally calmed down. I will never understand why something so inconsequential generates such a reaction. Lysandre even demanded a day long ceremony for such a thing. To think he tried to strongarm the League into expelling the one arrested for the murder which only kept it in the spotlight that much longer. Ridiculous, simply ridiculous. There is work to be done, innovations to be made, mysteries to be discovered! Don’t they know why they work here? This is a place of science, a place where emotion has no value. This is where they all gather to create the future. Granted, none will be around to admire what they’ve contributed to, but there’s no need to worry. For I will be.

I spent all of NaNo writing for this like a mad man and am quite proud of it

Just a quick note about how Freak's portions are done
Freak doesn't call himself by name in his narration, so in those bits he just uses his pronouns but capitalized when referring to himself
Hopefully that prevents any confusion

Oooooh it is here - the story including all the extracts which made me use eye react emojis because of the Intrigue dkgvfdkgdfkg
He’s been successfully detained hasn’t he?
might need a comma between "detained" and "hasn't he"

hello can i say how much i like this part dvdsfjg that's one hell of a first line from him and also all the intrigue/imagery, all of it
“Lonely Nature, not really the best, but not hindering anything important. OUCH, Hustle. RIP in peace Air Slash flinch hax.”
“Where in Giratina’s unholy domain did you crawl out from?”
elly's response is the most understandable thing ever
“Wait, what else have you done?”
“You got a millennium?”
these lines are totally not gonna come back nope nope ;pppp

a couple of artistic choices and things here: the "He" capitalised is a little strange for me. The only time i've seen the capitalised He pronoun is when God is referred to in the Bible, so it is a little jarring for me to see them on this Freak guy who evidently has v different connotations ;ppp however i'm sure you do have a legit good reason like it may be meant to make this guy look v idiosyncratic and throw people off generally (in which case it works)
If they were created to hold prisoners, comfort shouldn’t be a priority. So who made them, and why?
perhaps they were created for another purpose hmm... they certainly have a bit of flair to them right ;p

So first Christmas, now ringing in the New Year with an update of this
Going to have this be updated monthly, at the start of the month for now
Also this is a shorter one, so I think it's better to have it close after the first update
So hope you continue to enjoy

@sky_ All the extracts put together make a story I very much like
Freak is always going to be great
Ignore these lines, they're unimportant
Capitilized "He" is really just to make it clear that it's Freak being referred to but now that I look at it, I think I'll drop it

Elly woke up to the sound of her alarm, going off for the third time that morning, and the snooze button was as tempting as ever. But she set it an hour early for a reason so time to shuffle out and get the day started with a shower. A quick splash of cold to fully wake up and a good amount of hot to relax later, she was set to get packing. First on the check list; checking her pants’ inventory. Potions, ethers, snacks, big fuck off knife, extra goggles, pepper spray, snacks, map and compass, flashlight, phone, snacks, extra batteries, portable chargers, snacks and..... more snacks. Being fair, they were snacks of various qualities and flying requires a lot of energy. Should she pack another bag? Nah, they wouldn't be on the road for more than a couple hours at a time, and she could get into contact with the League whenever. An unexpected bonus was the League paying for all commodities due to her situation, so if she did need another bag she could just grab one from a League building and have Freak carry it. .... No that was a terrible idea, he was barely trustworthy in a jail cell wearing power dampening cuffs, much less outside with anything of hers. Yet here she was preparing to take him as far as he could reach in the league. If she was lucky, he’d flop at the first gym, but if he was that weak she wouldn't be needed. And soon herself will be all she had for a while. What a lovely day.

He doesn’t wake up, more breaks out of his trance. Not needing to sleep was one of many perks of being a Being. He had learned a good way to pass time was to meditate, to simply sit and let his mind drift, maybe figure something out that could prove he didn’t do the murder. He found nothing, which was to be expected. A lack of memories tends to make filling in the events around a death rather impossible. And to add onto the unfortunates, he remains completely still while meditating so there’s another point to the Ditto comparison. What kind of species turns into stone when they sleep? Maybe he really was just an incredibly elaborate Ditto. Either way, he’s still himself, and that’s all that mattered. A buzz sounded and the cuffs clashed as they stuck together to keep his hands in a non-threatening placement. A couple minutes later, the Boldore guard opened the door and stood aside for his prisoner to walk out. “Since you’re leaving today, and will be attending the opening ceremony, we need you to be presentable.”

“My good sir, I am in cuffs, have this mask, and wear clothing that smells like an exhaust pipe of my own free will. ‘Presentable’ is not a word that I have ever cared about being.”
“Well good for you, but the league does. They’re getting enough flak from-”
“Yeah, yeah I remember.” He stood up straight and did a spot-on impression of the suit who had visited him with the news. “ ‘The Kalos league is under immense pressure to disqualify you entirely, but as you have yet to legally be declared a criminal some leeway has provided, so it would be appreciated if you were to not call any more attention than you already do.’” He laughs at the end of the mimicry and switches to his normal voice. “Honestly they should’ve left me in here for it. At least I could have called it a ‘seru-mony’. “
“.... Let’s go.” The guard dragged him away to get a wash and outfitted for the day. All the way he smiled and thought to himself.
‘What a lovely day.’

Elly stood outside the prison as Freak was brought out, now having cleaned up and wearing a fresh white shirt and black pants. The cleansed look was thrown off due to the singed blue jacket he had on, the sleeve cuffs burned off showing the binding cuffs. Now that she could see him in proper lighting she noticed everything about Freak looked like he just walked out of a fire. While his marble white mask was oddly stainless, his skin was ashen to an almost literal degree, and his hair also looked like he stuck his head in a fireplace. His hands were covered with charcoal black gloves that looked like they’d leave a mark on whatever they touched. When he turned around to shout at a guard who tried to shove him forward, she saw that the back had a massive scorch mark on the back. Was there a design there that he burned off, or was the burn the marking he wanted? Once Freak was outside of the gates, they closed leaving only the two of them. Now that the two were properly face to face, Elly could see that Freak was shorter than her by a good four inches. How much of his appearance was something he chose to be and which parts weren't? “So. Where we dropping?”
“.... We’re going to be walking to-”
“Walk? Really? Flying is going to be a lot faster-”
“And a lot more likely that you will try to ditch me.”
“Ok, why would I do that?” Freak’s mask shifted to show a raised eyebrow. “Seriously explain why, you literally hold the key to my cuffs.”
“Oh, I’m sorry, I thought you said you could break them, or was that just talk?”
“...... Bit of both.”
“Uh-huh.”
“..... So walking. Not even a bike?”
“Do I look like someone who owns a bike?” She flapped her wings to emphasize.
“Fair enough.”
Elly moved behind Freak and pushed him lightly to get him to start walking. “As I was saying, we’re heading to Aquacorde where there will be a ceremony to start off your league challenge with the other challengers. You don’t need to do anything other than be there.”
“I think we both know that I’m not going to just ‘be there’. There’s going to be a lot of action.”
“If you try anything-”
“I meant other people. Everyone thinks I brutally killed someone and am only participating thanks to red tape and loopholes. It doesn’t matter what power you may have, there are going to be either people who have a sense of justice, or want to try and thin out the field of competition who will try to take me out before I even start. So unless you’re absolutely certain you can take on a crowd of league challengers, I am absolutely going to get into a fight.”
“Oh I think I can take on a few newbies.”
“Really?” Freak’s doubt made Elly realize that he might not know what her job was.
“.... Do you not know what I do for a living?”
“Well unlike you, I did not get a profile on whom I was going to be strapped to for the next while.”
“I work for the Kalos League as a gym monitor. I fight gym leaders on a regular basis to make sure they’re still capable of doing the duties required of their titles.”
“Oh. Ooooooooooh. So that’s why you were picked. They needed someone strong enough to keep me in check, but since it’s League season, your position isn’t required right now.” He turned around for a second to look at Elly’s expression. She bit her tongue as she nodded in confirmation. His lingering gaze told her she had made an error in that. “It’s a bit more than that isn’t it? Something that wasn’t told to you, but you at the very least feel is true.” He cocked his head to the side. “Now what could that be....”
“Stop,” she snapped at him. She remembered seeing him tilt his head when they first met, and she didn’t like what it meant. “No analysis of me. Don’t even try to finish that thought.”
“Imma think it.”
“As long as it stays in your head, I couldn’t give a damn.”

‘Now I gotta figure this out.‘ He was thankful for being given something to think about as they walked. She refused to say anything, so that meant that there was something she didn’t like about this job, beside having to follow him around. Not something said directly, but heavily implied. Her job was to check on the strength of gym leaders and fight them, so she’s obviously very strong. But these were gym leaders, so it’s unlikely that she was the only one who had it, that job meant she had to risk being injured all the time. That’s it! She was probably a balanced middle, strong and competent enough so she could be trusted to look after him. But just expendable enough so if something were to happen, say the accused murderer she’s guarding murders her, it’s not anything that couldn’t be replaced. Oh what a treat that was to figure out. He was about to laugh, but remembered the conversation they just had. He was probably going to get into a fight, so perhaps he shouldn’t antagonize the one who he was stuck with. Gotta build that good karma, precious little could for him.
Wait. Wait. He would need to fight without his powers. That wouldn’t pan out too well for him if it goes on too long or if there are too many. Improvisation was his strong suit, but even that had a limit until the stitches started to snap. But now was a good time as any to plan for that..... “Hey, how far away are we from Aquacorde?”
“We’re only a couple miles out. At this pace, we’ll be there in under an hour.”
“Wait, they kept me this close to civilization?”
“Between myself and those cuffs, you’re not much of a threat.”
“Oh, hey, is that pride? That an actual emotion coming from you?”
“Shut it.”
“You can’t keep being an Ice Queen this whole time, you know. Sooner or later that mask will crack and you won’t be able to patch it, so feel free to actually express yourself!”
“.... I think I’ll pass.”
“Fine, but you gotta let it go at some point,” He laughed at his own joke thinking that it was so sad Gabrielle didn’t understand it. Well not like she could, no one could, it was yet another thing that was his alone. His whole shtick was using powers that weren’t his, so that which does belong to only him was to be relished. This mask, this jacket, and all these long lost stories that only lived in his head. Not burden, but a treasured prize to be shared in bits.

I’ve discovered that my personal cameras have been tampered with. It was likely done by the same culprit who broke into my lab and committed the previous offense. They have been looped, but I’m not sure from when. It will take a couple days to restore the footage given the other work I have. Lysandre has been even more insistent that I focus on his task. I will admit that I am under obligation to do so, he is paying me after all, but the belief that I have nothing better to do is absurd. But I am nothing if not patient, so I will trust the loop was only meant to hide the presence of someone for now. But if something is wrong.... To be considered later.

Potions, ethers, snacks, big fuck off knife
Elly deserves all the snacks and big knives in the world xD
No that was a terrible idea, he was barely trustworthy in a jail cell wearing power dampening cuffs, much less outside with anything
Sensible common sense Elly gives me life I care she
Now that she could see him in proper lighting she noticed everything about Freak looked like he just walked out of a fire
Totally not important info nope, definitely not ;p also this mask being a v unearthly pale white is a v striking image
That’s it! She was probably a balanced middle, strong and competent enough so she could be trusted to look after him. safjkhdsjkf honestly Elly and Freak both being smart and trying to figure each-other out is going to be very interesting xD and oh no! Let's hope Freak is moral enough to not exploit Elly's expendability somehow... hopefully... do I have faith in him tho sdkghsjkg
“You can’t keep being an Ice Queen this whole time, you know. Sooner or later that mask will crack and you won’t be able to patch it, so feel free to actually express yourself!”
Think it's intentional that Freak sounds like he's been reading a TV Tropes page haha, all the 4th wall breaks ;p

Few tiny things - "he laughed at his own joke" needs a comma after it, it should be "not a burden", also "so that which does belong only to him" may need a tense change to fit so it's "so that which belonged only to him".

Okay so i know I’ve gotten spoiled on most of this cause of our DM’s, but I do want to say that you’ve got a great story going on here. I love the characterizations of Freak and Elly, (especially Freak), as well as the subtle world building you have going on the the background. I’m excited to see more

This ghost is happy with food, rest, quiet and cuddles. They may try to be edgy or mysterious, but are often told that they present as the opposite.

This is intriguing…Freak seems like a very interesting character to follow.

Out of curiosity, how does this relate to the gameplay? Is Freak the player character and Elly the Togekiss the starter?

Ooh, this is a good one. I love the mystery of Freak, how he was framed for a crime he didn't commit (which I'm betting was committed by another one of his kind, whatever they are -- Mew, perhaps? Mewtwo?), and how his personality shows in his interactions with Elly. Not many storylockes hook me, but this one definitely does.

It's a good title, too. Fits the story like a glove.

Feburary update time!
In which a new character is introduced and Freak tells a room full of people who hate him to go f*ck themselves.

@sky_ Elly has been a serious character so far, so snacks and big f*ck off knife to add a bit of humor
yes, nothing important to see here, no hinting to anything I may have explained in great detail in DMs here
Freak sounding like he's reading TV tropes is very intentional. It's a fun thing to do

@Faleep Honestly I think my approach is less 'subtle' and more "ok, here's what you need to know for current context and that's all for now"
And thanks for betaing this chapter!

@QuietGuardian Freak's main purpose is to entertain, so happy to see that's he interesting to follow!
In terms of gameplay, Freak is both the player character and the team, which'll get more elaboration next update
Elly is a Togekiss because I was originally going to use different gameplay for this run, but I didn't like how that turned out, so I did another run
In the first run, I had a Togekiss get to the E4 so that's why Elly is one

@Trollkitten Freak's framing may or may not have been done by one of his own, but I'll say that Mew/Mewtwo aren't one of those. They're Pokemon, while Freak's species are simply called Beings. couldn't really think of anything better
Glad to see I could hook you into this and hope you continue to enjoy.

Aquacorde was both suffocatingly small and uncomfortably gigantic. Normally a quiet place, it was now packed with League challengers of various ages and species. Trying to walk through the crowd alone was disorienting, but with a certain someone in tow....
“Freak, can you move any faster?”
“I am trying actually!” If he was then he certainly was failing. His cuffs may have stuck his forearms together behind his back, but that’s no excuse for his legs to not be working properly. He stumbled about while trying to follow her, making what seemed to be an attempt to bump into every person he walked past. “My power makes crowds a pain.” He gestured to all the Gijinka surrounding them. “All these new people with all their summaries being uploaded directly into my mind, you have no idea what that’s like.”
“Ok, what is this power, exactly? I know you wrote a paper about it, but I’d rather you say it yourself.”
“Look, it would take hours to explain what I can do properly. For a frame of reference, imagine trying to memorize dozens of songs while they’re all playing at the same time. That’s what I’m dealing with right now.”
“.... Ok, fine. Here’s what we’re going to do.” She walked behind Freak and looped her arms through his. “Don’t squirm, it’ll throw me off.” She spread her wings, ignoring the shouts of people around her as they moved out of her way.
“I can only promise to attempt to try,” Given this was Freak, that was as close as she was going to get. Elly flapped her wings and lifted the two of them up into the air, Freak now being the most dangerous piece of carryon luggage. For his part he kept his movement to a minimum, ignoring some kicking when other flying types approached out of curiosity. The drop off point was simple enough to find, after all it was the only building with more than three floors; the League Hall, where all great adventures begin. Cheesy tagline notwithstanding, it was a fitting place as any to start the gym challenge. Close to Santalune, but far away enough from Lumiose that construction costs and traffic weren’t crippling. Elly flew up to the roof and carefully set Freak down as a Furret attendant rushed over with a clipboard in hand.
“You are Challenger Freak and his escort Elly, correct?” Elly nodded and pulled out her League ID for verification.
“I am Freak, yes.”
“Wonderful, now I’m sure you already know this, but for legal reasons I’ll need you to sign these saying that you are aware of the terms that allow you to participate.”
“That’s a bit difficult at the moment.” Freak turned to show his bound arms. “Unless that’s why you have that.” He nods to a Linoone attendant holding a suitcase with a Lysandre Labs logo.
“That is for your escort,” The Furret explained. He motioned for the Linoone to hand it to Elly. She opened the case to see a sort of full arm glove made out of what seemed to be the same material as Freak’s cuffs, a black material that wasn’t quite metal or plastic. It was surprisingly light as she put it on, and it fit comfortably, but she couldn’t shake the feeling something was off about it. It reached up to her elbow and felt more like an extension of herself instead of an overly elaborate sleeve, and the snugness was unsettling. Whoever made this knew the exact size that would fit her and she had no idea how they knew to do that. After a couple seconds it turned on and a hologram display popped up from the surface and hovered a couple inches above it. The display featured Freak’s mugshot, mask still on, and a switch and a dial. The switch was labeled ‘Restraints’ that was turned on and the dial was ‘Abilities’ with a number counter at zero. Elly flicked ‘Restraints’ off and Freak’s arms became unstuck. The attendants backed away and Elly kept her finger above the switch.
“It’s ok, if he tries anything I’ll stop him.” She reassured them. Freak didn’t seem to be doing anything, just stretching his arms.
“Oh thank Above. Good job Elly, this feels great!” He shouted at her, ignoring that they were three feet apart. He looked at the attendants who backed away from him. “C’mon give me the thing to sign. I am literally powerless right now, and I have no motive to attack you or her. Even if I got that thing from her it’s useless to me.”
“.... Why is this useless to you?” Elly put her finger closer to the Restraints switch.
“Because it’s made to be worn on the right arm.” He said this like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
“... What?”
“Read my file, it’ll make sense.” He waved dismissively at her and beckoned the Furret over to him so he could sign the papers. After some more convincing he got his signature down. “Now can I go inside? I am the last person who wants me here, so it’s best we just get things over with.” He started to walk over to the roof entrance until the cuffs buzzed and trapped his arms again. When he turned around his mask had changed his eyes to be half closed, Elly guessed in unamusement at her turning the restraints back on. “Really?”
“Really.”
“..... Ok, fine, lead the way.” He stepped aside to let her open the door and walked in. She grabbed him and kept Freak in the lead, trying her best to ignore the looks everyone gave the two of them as they walked through the halls. An attendant standing in front of an elevator gave a shout and waved her over.
“This is challenger Freak?”
“Yes,” Elly answered for Freak before he could give a quip.
“Ok, we’re going to need you to let his arms free for this. I know,” He held up a hand before she could protest. “But we have considered a likely possibility of Freak being targeted by other challengers, so we ask that he have freedom of his arms to defend himself.”
“But I’ll be there-”
“No you won’t. League rules, only challengers and selected press reporters are allowed in the room, fire hazards and all that” Elly wanted to protest, but if this is what the League had decided on then it wasn’t her place to argue. And in this case, Freak’s actions were on the League, not her. With a sigh she flicked Freak’s restraints free and let him pass into the elevator with the attendant.
“See ya in a bit, Gabrielle!” Without being given a chance to respond, the doors closed, and Freak waved as he vanished behind them.

“I am going to get into a fight, you know.” The attendant stayed silent. He was probably scared out of his mind, but his dedication to staying professional stood firm. Well that’s boring. “Ok, serious question, why was I allowed to join? Is that something you were told, or is it above your pay grade?” The offended look the attendant tried to hide told that he did know and was hurt that it was suggested he didn’t. “Ok, could you just spill because I’m not gonna stop asking.”
“.... To put it simply, we wanted to avoid a troublesome precedent so close to the start of the season. If it was ruled that you couldn’t participate then we would have to define what criminal charges were grounds for disqualification. Things can get competitive, and higher ups are worried that if we decided that being charged, but not convicted, of a crime would result in foul play in an attempt to knock out another challenger. There are several other factors of course. The severity of your charge and the fact that the case against you has some holes, like a lack of motive, meant that there was a fair amount of doubt without further investigation, but there wasn’t enough time for that.”
“So as a middle ground I got these fucking cuffs.”
“..... That is what was agreed upon, yes.”
“I’m guessing it was Lysandre’s idea? I don’t know the guy, but his name keeps popping up.”
“He employs- I mean employed- your supposed victim,” The attendant kept using non-accusatory language. While appreciated, his flat tone suggested that it was something he had been trained to say instead of it being his own beliefs. That was for the best, because if he didn’t then this ride would be significantly more awkward. “He spent quite a while lobbying to have you removed entirely, but ultimately the decision was left to the Champion.”
“How kind to know that at least one person has heard of innocent until proven guilty.” The elevator dinged and opened, having now arrived on the bottom floor. A quick walk later and he found himself in an auditorium mostly filled with challengers and-
“There he is!”
“Challenger Freak, a few questions before the ceremony begins!”
“Did you kill that Seviper?”
“Are you really a Ditto?”
Fucking paparazzi.... He was quickly swarmed with cameras and microphones from various news stations. He should’ve expected this, a possible murderer taking on the gyms was bound to be major news. But the news was bs to start with, all they wanted from him were words, and those didn’t mean anything.
“In everyone’s best interest, I will not be answering anything right now. So just shut up and watch the show.” He bowed dramatically to the cameras. “I only seek to entertain.”
“What do you mean by ‘entertain’?”
“Are you planning on attacking any of the other challengers?”
“What are your thoughts on your handler?”
“Can you explain the document you wrote?”
The increasing shouts were ignored as he tried to find a seat in an empty area. Unfortunately it seems everyone had gotten into a group and there wasn’t a good spot for him to sit and be alone for the session. Oh, wait, there was a spot. Front left was empty, judging from the angle it made the stage hard to see, but that was fine. A voice was enough to get what was going on. He managed to get over without anything more than a pointed look, and some scared ones when they realized who he was. He plopped down and laid back as the lights dimmed and a voice began to speak.
“Greetings, challengers, I am so happy to see all of you here today,” Spoke a female voice, smooth and musical, an actress probably. While those lines were definitely scripted, there was genuine emotion. But as he suspected, he wasn’t able to see who it was. “For some of you this might be a brand new experience, while others are more experienced, but that is now why you are here. You are here because you have something to prove. Whether it be to yourself or the world, you want to make a statement. And we at the Kalos league are proud to help you make it.
“Now this next part is rather boring, I must admit, but I ask that you bear with me. As many of you know, the League consists of eight gyms and you must obtain a badge from each. Truth be told, order doesn’t matter, but of course we recommend you begin with Viola’s gym in Santalune. After winning all eight badges you then will head to Victory Road and the Kalos League Grand Hall where you will fight the Elite Four and the ones they’ve chosen to battle alongside, and then finally you will challenge yours truly for the highest seat of Champion.” Oh. Oh so this was the champion talking. His smile grew, but kept from laughing. This really was the best seat! He spaced out a bit while the Champion continued talking about the more technical details, something about participating in groups, but snapped back to attention when she paused awkwardly. “Now.... There is one more thing that I want to discuss. And that is about a certain challenger-” Wow that was a lot of unhappy people interrupting her. “N-Now I understand your concern.”
“You’re letting a fucking murderer join in!”
“What if he tries to kill one of us?”
“It’s insane!”
“Everyone, please!” The Champion was trying desperately to regain control. “Please, try not to freak out- oh that was a poor choice of words.”
“NO THAT’S FAIRLY ACCURATE!” The room grew still as his words spread. Everyone had their eyes on him, but he kept his own closed.
“I assume you are Freak?” Huh. That was unusual. The Champion said it like an actual name. Oh she is going to be an absolute joy to fight!
“That is me, yes. Now that I have everyone’s attention allow me to say a few words.” Without waiting for any confirmation he stood and faced the crowd, still keeping the Champion out of his view. “Now let’s start with the obvious part. My guilt. Honestly I’m not going to say anything on that, all of you have already made up your minds on me. My words mean nothing to you, and yours mean nothing to me. So I’ll leave you with this. If you want to try and take me out, to be a hero stopping an evil evil man, or just because you think you’d get away with it, feel free. I’ll take everyone on! It’s why I applied in the first place, I just want a fight. So come at me, challenge me, because I don’t plan on stopping! I’m heading all the way to the fucking TOP motherfuckers!” He paused and basked in the brief silence before the cascade of shouts, death threats, and camera shutters capturing his stance.
Glorious.

Elly was walking back to the roof when she got a call on her phone. A quick look at the caller ID and she instantly answered. She needed a friendly voice right now.
“Hey, Malva.”
“Hello, Elly, how is your... luggage?”
“He just got sent to the opening ceremony.”
“And you didn’t tag along? Elly dear, you know that you don’t have to follow every rule so seriously.”
“Weeeeeeell.” There was a pause as Malva processed the guilt in her voice.
“Oh you naughty girl.” The Honchkrow’s teasing caused Elly to feel her face start to burn.
“MALVA!” There’s a fair bit of laughter and Elly left for a more quiet place to talk, even just saying the Elite Four member’s name attracted looks. Shouting it out in embarrassment didn’t help either. “Ok look, he’s just incredibly disturbing and I can’t relax with him around. Have you seen his mask? Creepy jagged teeth and those eyes... Where did he even get that thing?”
“No, you’re fine Elly dear, just from his file I can barely imagine what standing in line for a coffee with him would be like, much less what you’ll be going though.”
“You’ve read his file?”
“Have it on my desk right now actually. I mean, you’re one of my monitors, I want to know what you’ll be stuck with for the next few weeks.”
“Alright, I want you to check something for me. Freak mentioned something about his right arm, and I want to know if there’s anything wrong with it.”
“One second,” Elly heard papers shuffling. Malva never had a tidy desk, so it surprised her when she got an answer almost right away. “Hm. Well nothing’s wrong with it.... Technically.”
“Technically?”
“Well nothing can be wrong with something that doesn’t exist.”
“... What? It’s what?!”
“It’s gone. The whole thing, even his shoulder. He’s wearing a metal prosthetic which he claims to have crafted himself. I’m guessing he made his mask in a similar fashion.”
“But how.... What....”
“Hey, tell you what, I’m also at the Hall. Let’s meet outside and we’ll look over this thing together. I need some fresh air.”
“No, it’s fine, I have a copy back-” Elly heard a window open.
“Too late, Elly dear, see you in a minute!” And Malva hung up.
“..... Ground level it is.” Elly ran to the roof and started to circle the building looking for a pair of navy blue wings. She first met Malva a couple weeks after evolving into a Togetic when she was first trying to get a job in the League and ended up having a sparring match with her. Elly lost, of course, even with a type advantage Malva was overpowering. But after that the Elite Four member took a liking to her, and acted as.... Well more aunt-like, but Malva insisted that Elly think of her as an older sister giving advice to her lesser experienced sibling. A quick lap around the Hall and Elly spotted Malva on the ground waving up at her. Thankfully she was easy to spot, being mostly dark blue with white plumage around her neck. Elly landed and the two gave each other a quick hug.
“I see you’ve gotten the glove from Lysandre.”
“Yeah, it feels a bit... Too fitting if that makes sense.”
“He’s a bit of a perfectionist, so that’s almost certainly intentional. Come on, let’s grab something to eat,” She led Elly over to a group of food trucks parked around the Hall. The plot was fairly empty since all of the challengers and most of the camera crews were inside the building, so the two got some chicken wings and found a table to sit at without much waiting. “Don’t pinch any of mine, ok? Yours are way too spicy for me, even the bones.”
“I make few promises.”
“Hey, unlike you I don’t have constant challengers to fight and do have a news program to host, so gotta watch my diet. Greasy stuff like this I can only enjoy so rarely.” She waved a wing around before popping it into her mouth and eating it bones and all. A perk of being a Honchkrow, they’re made to eat all bits of an animal.
“You ever think this is some kind of extended cannibalism? You know, since we’re eating another bird? .... Do I count as a bird?”
“You got feathers and wings?”
“Last I checked, yes.”
“Well there you go.”
“Um.” The two turn to see a few reporters standing nearby. “We were wondering if you would be willing to make a few comments-” One reporter bursted through to shove a mic in Elly’s face.
“Why did you accept the job of guiding Freak through the gym challenge, and how do we know that you are capable of performing your job correctly?”
“Hey, shoo,” Malva tried to wave the group away. “If she’s getting interviewed by anyone, it’s me.” Elly watched her as the idea properly registered. “Hey, would you actually be able to-”
“Maybe later.”
“I’ll keep an opening.”
AHEM. I refer back to my previous questions.”
Sigh. Why and how I ended up with this job is my business alone. As for whether or not I’m capable.” Without breaking eye contact, Elly pulled out her knife and stuck it into the table. “I have a reasonable amount of confidence in myself.” The reporter clearly wanted to ask more, but a glance at the knife and the increasingly irritated E4 member convinced them to back away. The pair waited until the cameras had retreated to continue talking.
“I’m so glad I didn’t accidentally stab my wings,” She worked her knife a bit before it popped out of the table.
“That is quite the big fuck off knife.”
“I had it forged from some Skarmory feathers that fell off one of the other monitors.”
“I was expecting something a bit more metal, but that’s still some creative thinking. Most people would just try to use the feathers alone.”
“Got the idea from you actually.” Elly gestured at Malva’s top which was coated in feathers from her own wings. “They fell off, and not like they’re gonna get much else use.
“Aw, I’m touched. And here I was thinking I’d never be able to rub off on you.”
“Wouldn’t go that far.”
“Oh, is that a challenge?” The conversation was cut when a flood of challengers entered the area. “Let’s put this on hold, we should probably find your luggage first.”
“yyyyyyep. Let’s go.” Malva got people to clear an area for the two of them to take off. They soared around trying to find Freak. He was probably still inside, it’s not like the League staff would actually let him lose without her watching him, right? Right? That would be absolutely insane, wouldn’t it? So why did she just hear a battle cry?

“FFFFFRRRRRRREEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAK!!!!”

Arceus damn it all to Distortion.

Freak was expecting someone to pick a fight with him after the ceremony, but not that it would be done so efficiently. The crowd was certainly a good cover, but those two trying to be discreet about following him weren’t doing a very good job at not being noticed. Stellar job at keeping the League staff away, though, gotta remember to thank them for that later, assuming they didn’t attempt to fight him for real. But they were, and he knew that, so all he did for the moment was work his way outside with everyone else. He stopped a few feet out the door and turned right around to address his tagalongs.
“Hey, do you two want any tips on how to be sneaky? I’m rather skilled at it, so maybe listen to what I have to say before trying anything, eh?” There was a bit of a slowdown as everyone tried to figure out who he was talking to, but eventually two people stepped forward. One was obviously a Glameow, spring shaped tail and eternally smug look made that clear as day. The other had purple skin and.... It was brown, but definitely wasn’t hair. Wait was it... “You a Skrelp?”
“... yes.”
“Neat.” Ok, that was just some kind of mimic seaweed then. “So what exactly is your plan here? Try to antagonize me into a fight, or just make vague threats? Oh, were you planning on leading with ‘you must think you’re tough shit’?”
“.... You just really like to take the fun out of things,” Miss Smug walked a circle around Freak stopping with an unimpressed look on her face. “I thought you would be taller. Or have a deeper voice. Are you even really that much of a threat?”
“I am quite satisfied with my height and voice, but I’m gonna have to take issue with that challenge of my strength.”
“Oh? Is that a sore spot for you? I mean you are a Ditto, so none of your power is truly yours is it?”
“No, I just dislike spreading misinformation is all. Also if you’re trying to find something that’ll enrage me that’s not going to work. I have long dealt with my issues, so at best you’re gonna bore me.” That caused Miss Smug to pause. Freak guessed that she figured out that none of her teasing would generate the response she wanted. She turned to Skrelp, can’t think of a nickname right now, and pointed to her face. What was she up to- wait was that acid?
“AAAAAA! YOU MONSTER!” She screeched as a purple liquid covered her face.
“He did it! He tried to murder her!” Skrelp shouted while he pointed at Freak. Oh. Ok, highly diluted acid, but enough to look real. It probably did sting, but nothing serious.
“Huh. Not even mad, that was pretty clever.” Freak gave a golf clap as the crowd moved away to form a circle around him. Skrelp and Miss Smug were still committed to the act and were shouting at the crowd for someone to help. Well hopefully Elly will see this and then everything will be-
“So you didn’t even bother trying to hide your true intentions did you, you bastard?” Freak turned and looked up to see.... Judging by the pompadour, a Staraptor land behind him. “The League was foolish to allow you to stay.”
“I mean, you’re not wrong, but not in the way that you think.”
“Do you really think that you will get away with this?”
“Given that I have done literally nothing besides talk, yes.” Pompadour opened his mouth to retort, but is cut off
“Oi, we causin’ trouble? Oh. Well well well, lookie here.” A very round individual shoved his way into the ring. An Electrode given that half white head and eyebrow game. “We got ourselves a little freak, don’t we?”
“I mean, my name is Freak and I am shorter than you, so that would be an accurate statement.”
“.... You got a bit of a mouth, don’t you?”
“I have been informed, yes.”
“ENOUGH!” Pompadour flapped his wings to get airborne. “You attacked an innocent bystander, if the League won’t do anything about you, I will!” He flew up and dive bombed, readying a Wing Attack. Freak kept an eye on Pompadour’s path and dodge rolled out of the way. It’ll take the flyer a bit to reorient so let’s try diplomacy with the ones on the ground.
“Now, I know what you’re thinking, and I suggest that you not.”
“Oh, I’m absolutely gonna.”
“.... Sure, I can’t stop you.” Roly-poly is definitely gonna try to attack, so just keep an eye on him and try to-
WHAM
Oh right. 140 base speed. Freak flew up into the air and then was promptly smacked back down. Roly-poly had charged at him with a Spark and launched him right into Pompadour’s Wing Attack. Ok might be a bit harder than first imagined. First, stand up. Second, take note of position relative to others. “First off. Ow. Second off. You’re really teaming four v one against someone who can’t fight back?”
“AS IF YOU WOULD EVER FIGHT FAIR!” Staraptor shouted from above. Freak slowly paced around the ring, not looking away from Electrode.
“OH SHUT UP! And you two.” He spun on his heel to face Skrelp and Glameow. “You’ve stopped screaming for someone who got acid on her face. If you’re waiting to chip in to say you took out a monster, now is the time.” For his question he got his own face full of acid, mostly on his mask, but still annoying. “Really?” A shout comes from behind, so Roly-Poly is making his move. Freak dropped to the floor. Just collapsed and laid down flat. Still got trampled a bit by the big roly-poly, but the Spark-charged ball instead rammed into Skrelp who shoved Glameow out of the way. Unexpected, but not unwanted. Now to get a clear view of-
“Gotcha bitch!” Miss Smug had decided to stop her act and wrapped her spring-tail around him. Not going to be getting out of this without any powers. “Now apologize and I might let you go. Or else either the guy in the sky, or Electrode will use you as a punching bag. What do you say, you prick?”
“I will say....” Roly-Poly was getting ready to Spark, so might as well. Freak spun in place bringing him face to face with Miss Smug and took a breath.
“Uh.” She clearly hadn’t expected that or what was next.
“FFFFFRRRRRRREEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAK!!!!” That scream wasn’t capable of rupturing an eardrum, but it did what he wanted. Miss Smug covered her ears and Freak spun around fast enough to drag her and shield himself from a direct impact from Roly-Poly. The impact gave him enough slack to wiggle out, and for once he got some good luck and the crowd learned that Roly-Poly was a bigger threat than a powerless supposed Ditto and held him down.
“Lemme up!”
“Are you crazy? Thanks to you, two challengers need medical attention!”
“I want to point out I have done nothing but defend myself.” Lots of angry looks, but they couldn’t deny it.
“YOUR JOURNEY ENDS NOW!” Shit, forgot about Pompadour. Oh wait, no, he’s stopped why has....
Buzz
Oh. Well arms were stuck again. And that was a mad Togekiss.
“You better have a very good reason for this.”
“Hello, Gabrielle.”
“This is your luggage? Well he doesn’t seem very threatening.” A Honchcrow? Wonder what her deal is.
“I think the pile of bodies begs to differ.”
“Hey, none of them are mine!”
“Is that why there’s a bit of a dogpile here?” Gabrielle’s friend hovered over
Roly-Poly. People walked away from her, so she’s probably important.
“Yes. And you are?”
“...... Do you not recognize me?” Gabrielle’s friend questioned him.
“Nnnnnnnnno.”
“....... Elly dear, is he being serious?”
“I... don’t know.”
“Hm. Well, if you must know, I am Malva of the Elite Four.” Elite Four- damn it! “Why do you look disappointed?”
“I don’t like having my fights spoiled.”
“You think you’ll manage to challenge me?” The friend asked as she landed.
“I wouldn’t have applied if I didn’t think I could.”
“..... You are a confident one.”
“You say ‘confident’ but I hear ‘arrogant’.”
“You said it, not me.”
“Not my fault if you can’t hide subtext.”
AHEM” Gabrielle was getting quite annoyed. Wonder why. “Are you going to fight anyone else, or are you done?”
“I didn’t even fight-”
“ARE. YOU. DONE?”
“I have finished yes.”
“Good. Malva I’ll be right back, I’m just going to leave him with some League staff,” She grabbed his arms and flew off. “We’ll start heading to Santalune tomorrow.”
“You spending time with your friend while I wait?”
“Yes. Forgive me for wanting to indulge in a fun afternoon.”
“No, I get it. Hey, could I have a power?”
“No.”
“Come on, I took some damage and I just want to heal myself.”
“Then you’ll just have to heal over time like everyone else.”
“..... Fine.” Not like he was a stranger to pain. More an old friend by now. A toxic friend, but still. Garielle dropped him back on the roof and immediately was surrounded by apologizing League attendants. He wasn’t able to hear much else, because he got shoved inside and put inside an empty conference room with guards outside. Well at least he was left alone. Plenty of time to meditate.

Data log

I have managed to establish a reliable line of communication to keep track of the arrested one, Freak I believe is his name. A bit odd, but given the existing inhabitants of this place, odd is more the normal. I will admit the line is more roundabout than I would’ve liked. From Gabrielle to Malva to Lysandre to me. The relations Malva holds with both leads me to believe that there would be little error in reporting information, but that’s still two people that information must go through before it gets to me. An uncomfortable room for error, nothing that I can’t plan around, but it does make things more concerning. I will attempt to convince Lysandre to allow me to listen in on Malva’s reports. I haven’t been able to start on camera recovery just yet. Will do so tomorrow at the latest.

“I can only promise to attempt to try,” Given this was Freak, that was as close as she was going to get.
Your main character continues to amuse. And I like how he takes it in stride when others frame him for an attack—though I hope at least Elly believes he didn't do it.

March time
More Malva

@sky_ Now that wouldn't be very in character now would it?
Unfortunately for Elly, type advantage isn't everything

@QuietGuardian As he said, Freak is here to entertain. If he's attacked he'll find a way to turn it into a show.
Elly meanwhile doesn't find him so amusing.

“Oh wait, need to get a starter.”
“A what?” It was the morning after the opening ceremony and Freak’s scuffle. It took a lot of interviews, mostly conducted by Malva, but eventually the story of that Glameow and Skrelp trying to set Freak up got out and the League managed to stop any rumors before they spread too far. Elly spent almost an hour getting everything together for the day and then she had to get Freak which took an unexpectedly long time since he was asleep. He called it meditation, but she’s pretty sure there was snoring.
“A starter power. I need to pick a Pokemon to replicate.”
“What’s a Pokemon?”
“Oh, sorry, Gijinka. Keep forgetting it got changed, and I don’t use it as often as I should.”
“.... Ok, what do you mean by ‘pick’? You’re a Ditto, you don’t choose who to copy.”
“File.”
“..... Right that mimicry thing. So let’s assume that you didn’t lie about that. How would you even pick?” He pointed at his arm where she had the glove thing on.
“I do need my power for this, just for a minute.”
“...... Fine, but only for a minute.”
“Thank you.” She fiddled a bit and turned the power counter to 1. “There. Don’t make me regret it.”
“Alright. Spin the wheel!” Freak’s mask lit up with a display and started to cycle through silhouettes of creatures that Elly didn’t recognize until it slowed and stopped on a weird purple creature with a long tail with a stinger on it and two arms coming out the side of its head. “Drapion, nice! Typing’s great and that defense stat will be helpful.”
“.....That’s not a Drapion.”
“It is to me.”
“What does that even mean?”
“Nnnnnnot sure, honestly.”
“... What?”
“When you say Drapion I think of the buff scorpion, not whatever a Drapion actually looks like.”
“I.... I’m not gonna bother.”
“Anyway, let’s take a look. Lax, prefect, Sniper is fine, I like Battle Armor, but it works. Yes! Starting with Knock Off.” Elly flicked off the power switch and Freak’s mask reset back to showing his eyes which shifted into angry eyes. “Hey, I was still looking at those! And I need that for the other routes.”
“If we get attacked, I’ll turn it on, but not before. If the routes matter to you, make a list.”
“I already did. Route 2, 3, and Santalune Forest plus a small detour to 22 once we get to Santalune City. I know where my encounters are.” Elly considered not asking, but curiosity got the better of her.
“Encounters?”
“Oh, right, you guys wouldn’t know about challenge runs. One second.” Freak’s mask changed to display him now wearing glasses. “See it goes like this. You get the first encounter for each new area and that’s your lot for the entire place. If that mon you caught faints then you gotta release it. It was referred to as a ‘challenge run’. Think another name was floated for it, inspired by the first who tried it, but it didn’t catch on.”
“I know what most of those words mean when separate, but in that formation they make no sense.”
“..... Everytime we go somewhere new I randomly pick a power to use. If I am downed when I use that power, then I shelve it.”
“Getting better, but still obscure.”
“Oh dear, is the luggage acting up again?” Malva circled above them. She seemed to be focused on Freak as she landed, but only spoke to Elly. “They really should’ve put a muzzle on him, honestly don’t know why they let him keep that mask.”
“I bit at anyone who tried.”
“Further proving my point, I see.”
“If someone tried to rip your feathers out, would you just let them?”
“Depends on who it is and what the occasion happened to be. After all. it’s useful to have help during molting season and I need help getting loose feathers out. Not all contexts are bad.”
“Ok, bad read, I’ll ring you up when I got a better similie.”
“You do that- Oh! I can’t believe I almost forgot. Elly dear, could you offer me your arm?” Malva pulled out her phone and held it above the arm glove until a ding sounded. “Ok, now I just have to open this and....” The arm glove vibrated with the words ‘Incoming Call’ being displayed. Elly hit ‘accept’ and Malva’s face was projected in front of her. She looked back and forth between the hologram and the actual Honchkrow in front of her.
“Wait- how- What?!”
“The power of science is amazing, Elly dear.” The hologram moved in almost perfect synchronization with its feathers and blood counterpart. “Since you are employed under me, you’ll be reporting the day’s events to me with this every night. Or whenever I call you because I got bored, so keep an open schedule.”
“I can do that too,” They look at Freak who is pointing at his arm again. “Look, it’s going to be easier if you just leave me on one power. Again, I would be incredibly dumb to try and run from you or attack you, especially with Miss E4 here, so c’mon.”
“Again, no.”
“Eh, let him have a bit Elly dear. If he tries anything we can smack him into the ground.” She hesitated for a bit, but conceded that Malva had a point and allowed Freak one power.
“Thank you. Now one moment.” Freak’s mask displayed a spinning beach ball and a couple seconds later a mini-Freak hologram popped from the arm glove and waved at Elly. She resisted the urge to wave back to the chibi version of the creature in front of her. “Thank you. Anyway, do we got anything else, or can we go now? Please I want to get these encounters and prepare for the gym.”
“Encounters?” Malva asked, for the first time looking at Freak with uncertainty.
“Gabrielle can explain.”
“I don’t think I can.”
“Make an attempt. Now is mafia birb coming along or what?”
“What did he just refer to me as?”
“Don’t encourage him.”

Oh, fun, Mafia Birb decided to join. Well, at least she would put Gabrielle in a good mood. Over a canal and through the woods, to the first gym they go. Well, just that over the canal bit, because a notification popped up.
“Hold up, getting my Route 2 encounter.”
“Ok so.... This happens every time you get to a new named area?” Mafia Birb was trying to understand it, but clearly wasn’t getting a few pieces. Not that complex really, but then again she wasn’t the one who has the mask on her face.
“Dunno, this is the first time this has happened.” Elly shrugged as the mask started playing the encounter theme, and the virtual grass gave away to reveal....
“Chandelure.”
“Why do you sound neutral on it? I thought you’d like having something that strong right off the bat.”
“Well, yes, but it’s also a Stone evo, so it won’t learn any new moves and who knows when I’ll get to a move tutor.” Bag. Pokeballs. And throw. Good thing that Route 2 is a guaranteed catch. “Never been too big on stone evos, but only really particularly dislike friendship ones.
“What the distort are friendships evos?”
“Aw, massive pain to evolve. No set level, you just have to wait for an invisible meter that’s near impossible to figure out an exact measurement for and-” Wait. “...... You don’t know what friendship evos are?”
“Lysandre Labs and its professors have identified many forms of evolution. Ones influenced by time of day, Inkay’s whole having to be upside down thing, and obviously ones that require certain stones.” Mafia Birb pointed to herself and Gabrielle. “And training with certain items, like Weavile and Gliscor. Friendship evolutions aren’t something anyone has heard of.”
“But Gabrielle is one. Togepi to Togetic.”
“No I’m not.”
“So how did you evolve?”
“Gaining exp through combat, like everyone else.” No. No that couldn’t be right, could it? That wasn’t how Togepi worked. But did that mean....
“Are trade evos also not a thing?”
“.... No.”
“Ok, what about Escavalier and Accelgor?”
“Um.... Malva you know this one?”
“According to Lysandre Labs research, Shelmet and Karrablast need to be near each other to evolve. We’re still not sure why. But this is all fairly well known, have you been under a rock for the last few decades?”
“I have been quite happy being alone. Hell, I didn’t even come to Kalos until a few years back when I just wandered here.” Ok, not entirely true, but close enough.
“So you didn’t meet anyone who could’ve told you this?” Was that curiosity from Gabrielle or annoyance? She was still dedicated to being an Ice Queen so he wasn’t sure.
“I mean, probably did, but my kickback hinders what I can learn.”
“My, you’re really insistent on that power thing.” Mafia Birb shook her head in a false pity, how kind of her. “I understand wanting to be more than you are, but being fancy about it isn’t going to change that you’re a Ditto.” Ok, no.
“Look, it’s up to you whether or not you want to believe me, but I do not lie about my power. It is a more fundamental part of me than my own name, so I will ask that you respect it.” For her credit, Mafia Birb didn’t flinch despite how close he had gotten- and that was a knife in his face.
“Back. The fuck. Up.” Gabrielle thought she was threatening, adorable. Let’s just push that away, wouldn’t want anyone to have been hurt.
“Gabrielle, you really need to get better at sensing hostility. Or... Sensing a lack of it I guess.”
“How about this?” buzz click. Well there went the arms.
“.... Dick move.” MB grabbed his mask and shoved him out of her personal space.
“Move, dick.”
“Thought you were classy, Birb.”
“Oh I am, just not to anyone like you.” Not unreasonable, but fine. Gabrielle left powers on, so encounters were still on the table. Speaking of which, Santalune Forest. Spin the wheel!
“Hm.”
“What?” Ok, maybe it was good that MB tagged along because it seemed that Gabrielle wasn’t interested.
“Bayleef. I mean, not terrible, Meganium can take a hit, but doesn’t hit as hard as I would like and level up moveset isn’t the best. But it’ll work as my Grass type for now. Ooo starting with Poison Powd- AWW. Fucking minus Special Attack nature. Definitely switching out as soon as possible.”
“I desperately want to stop questioning him, but I can’t, I don’t know how you do it, Elly dear.”
“You need to spend more time with the gym leaders.”

Santalune Forest was as tranquil as ever. Beams of light poking through the trees and a well worn path underfoot lined by tall grass and trees covered in moss gave it a peaceful aesthetic. It’s a nice place to relax and get away from everything. And Freak seemed determined to leave the place as quickly as possible. “It seems your luggage wants to be the one dragging for once,” Malva noted.
“Hurry up! Sooner I beat the gyms, the sooner I can leave you.”
“I pray to Arceus that Viola sweeps the floor with him.” Elly knew that wouldn’t happen, but might as well try.
“Why not save him for me? I’ll make sure you’re there in person.”
“As great as that sounds, I think we both know the League wouldn’t let me anywhere near the Elite Four’s chambers.”
“Eh, rules can be bent,” Malva waved the concern away. “What’s the point in having power if you can’t occasionally abuse it? Besides, Diantha owes me a favor, I’m sure she’ll help them see the light.”
“Hm.” The woods gave way to Route 3. Freak stood staring at the route’s marker.
“Route 3. Every region insists on using numbers for their routes, and I never understand it. Anyway, wheely time.” His mask stopped on an image of a round blue creature with whiskers that seemed to form a thick moustache.
“Sealeo?” Malva pretended to twirl a moustache. “Guessing because of that facial hair.”
“Correct, Malva, five points.”
“Thank-”
“Don’t.”
“Ok, let’s see.... Above damn it, Adamant. Do have Thicc Fat, so that’s helpful.”
“Wait, no, stop,” Malva held the bridge of her nose. “Could you repeat that ability.”
“Thicc Fat.”
“.... Did you- Was that-” Malva gave Elly a pleading look. “Please tell me you heard the extra ‘C’.”
“I did and I hate it.”
“How is that possible?”
“It’s all in the pronunciation.”
“Pronounce it like that again, and I’m making sure you can’t use that power ever again.”
“We both know I can’t make that promise with any form of sincerity, Gabrielle.”
“Oh dear Arceus, do you need to word everything as complicated as possible?” She didn’t mean to shout, but this was finally starting to wear her down.
“Yes.”
“.....” Elly took a deep breath while she started to collect herself back into her, as Freak dubbed it, Ice Queen mode. “Move. Now. And no talking or I’m locking your arms for the gym battle.”
“Now that’s just not fair.”
“Ahem.” Malva put a hand on Elly’s shoulder to stop her from responding. “Or how about we put that mouth to something useful?” She pulled out a recording device and waved it at Freak. “No one’s been able to get a solid interview with him because he’s been locked up since the killing. And this would be just the perfect segment to run tonight. A little ratings booster to appease the corporate overlords for a while.”
“And I’m going along with this because....”
“Because I say so,” Elly held up the arm-glove and Freak’s eyes turned to their unamused look.
“.... Ok, fine, where do you want to start?” At his acceptance, Malva grinned and started the recording. Elly turned away to calm herself, but listened to the conversation.
“Good evening Kalos, and welcome to an exclusive interview with the infamous gym challenger: Freak. We’ll keep things simple to start. So first, something that I’m sure everyone is wondering; is that your real name?”
“It is a very real name, but to be less pretentious no it’s not the name I’ve always gone by. I picked it a few....” He started to count on his fingers but gave up after a moment. “Ok, not sure what metric of time I’m working with, but it was a long time ago, and no I’m not telling you what I used to be called.”
“Fair enough, next question, why do you dress like.... That?” She gestured to his mask and burned jacket. “And how does that mask work exactly?”
“So first bit, I dress like this because I think people judge on appearances far too quickly. Clothes, faces, and a certain lack of limbs can sway someone’s opinion before even hearing them say a word. They look at the surface and assume the overall, so I hide as much as I can.”
“To play Giratina’s advocate, what would be fair, if anything, to assume about a person based on appearance?”
“Well if we have to, you gotta look at the subtleties. For example, let’s look at Gabrielle.” Hearing that damned full name again, she turned around and held her finger above the restraint button.
“No you’re not.”
“Elly dear, please? Worst case I can ask to edit this out.” Malva had the look of a reporter in her eyes. Right now she had a great story and didn’t want to miss any of it, even if she has to keep a bit to herself.
“.... Fine.”
“Cool, so let’s start at the top. Goggles imply that she flies at high speeds and fairly often, given the wear on them. Nothing special on the upper body, so let’s move to the pants. I think I know why girls’ outfits never have pockets, she’s stolen all of them. Seriously how much storage space do your legs carry?”
“Enough.”
“Anyway. Given that she can probably fit the moon in there, she’s got stuff for any situation, and I feel like several self defense tools. Not sure why, because according to everyone, I am a Ditto and she probably has Aura Sphere and the math from there isn’t exactly Calculus. Sorry, got sidetracked, that happens.”
“I’ve noticed.”
“So back onto me, the mask. I made it myself after my arm. Both are created to be able to channel my power, which is why the mask can do its more complex displays. Even without my power active it can read my facial expressions and change the eyes accordingly.”
“I understand that, but why have the mouth glow when you’re talking?”
“Just a thing I wanted to have.”
“Everyone likes their personal touches. Now for something a bit less important, but still has me curious. What exactly made you decide to apply for a shot at the league? Dozens and dozens participate every year, and incredibly few have succeeded to beat the gyms much less successfully clear the E4, if I’m allowed a humble brag. So what exactly makes you think that you can go all the way to the top?”
“You are comparing the average gym challenger to me, the average fight enjoyer. Others may look for glory or to prove their abilities, but my motives are purely selfish ones. I just enjoy a good fight. Something to excite me, something that gets my blood flowing, and the satisfaction of victory at the end of it. I wanted to take on the gyms because there’s nothing that I love more than an all out brawl.”
“You certainly make it clear that fighting is a passion of yours. A very extreme one at that.”
“..... Ok, let’s not circle this, this is what everyone is gonna be soundclipping, so ask it.”
“I thought you would want to avoid that topic.”
“And I thought that you wanted good ratings.”
“That I do, so I suppose it’s time to move into the nitty gritty. View discretion is advised from here on out.” She paused for a moment, probably to give people time to change the channel, and then asked the obvious question. “Did you commit the crime?”
“No.”
“If not, then why do you think that you were arrested?”
“Because apparently I was hanging around the area at the approximate time of the murder.”
“‘Apparently’?”
“Ok, look, here’s what I’ve pieced together. For some reason I was near Lysandre Labs and I was in all likelihood called there by the one who died. I say this because I don’t remember any of it.”
“Last I checked, amnesia isn’t the greatest alibi.”
“It’s not my fault that’s my power’s kickback. Do you have any idea how annoying it is to not remember people when they die?” Freak’s tone seemed to tell he wasn’t lying, but then again who would be honest about a murder?
“Well, going along with that, wouldn’t you remember, say, standing over a body? I mean surely you would remember the aftermath, since that would be after the victim had died? After all, the coroner’s report showed that they would’ve died almost instantly from the wounds.”
“I mean…” Something was off in his voice. For once he didn’t sound casual, more like he was trying to figure out how to word his next sentence. “Yeah, my power would allow that. Someone dies in front of me, I’ll remember seeing their body, but nothing about them when alive. But still, nothing like that is in my head.”
“And why should we take your words at face value, especially when you cover your own?”
“Because I make a point to not lie. Actions matter above all else, but words are still important. If you lie, then that cheapens the worth of your words and it means every time you speak there will be doubt in those who listen. Also I just don’t like lying, not quite sure where I got that from, but it’s something that I’ve never seen the appeal in.” Again, he seemed to be completely sincere about this. But he had to be lying, there’s no way any of that could be true. He had shown his skill in analysis so he had to know what most people would be willing to buy. He's a murderer who had a lot of devotion to the act he created. He’s just a freak.

Mafia Birb pried a bit more, but everything that could be said had been. She did an outro and clicked the recording off.
“That enough?”
“Plenty, thank you for talking.”
“Anytime. Really all people need to do is ask, I’m happy to talk. Though I don’t seem to convince many.”
“Well that’s how the show goes. I don’t deceive, but if they would rather believe that I’m guilty, sure, fine be like that.” That was directed at Gabrielle and sure enough, she turned and made eye contact before facing away again. “I’m not going to try and prove my innocence, but it’s not like I’m just going to say I did a crime that I didn’t because that’s what people want.”
“That may be true, but maybe you shouldn’t hide things if you don’t want that to happen.”
“Eh?”
“Luggage, I’ve been at this job for a loooong time, I know when someone tries to hide something. To your credit it was only once. But a curious once.”
“.... Suddenly I like you a lot less and I didn’t know that was possible.”
“In my line of work, enemies are common. And I have worse mad at me than a Ditto in cuffs.”
“You know if you keep trying to downplay me, that only makes me more motivated to curbstomp you.”
THUNK
What was- Oh, Gabrielle stabbed a tree, how cute. “Elly dear, you don’t need to keep coming to my defense, I can do it well enough.”
“But he-” Mafia Birb cut Gabrielle off as her phone rang and answered without hesitation. She walked away, so words weren’t getting across, but the tone was legible. Oh? That’s an interesting emotion there. Given the way the words were said… An educated guess could be made to who the other person was.
“So sorry Elly, I need to go.”
“Did Sir Lysanderoth call you to his palace?”
“It’s Lysand- ... wait,” There it is. The best expression. Fear, confusion, and shock all mixed together into a look of an utter lack of comprehension. “H-how did.... What did you do? How could you have known that?!” Was that fury or embarrassment?
“Malva-”
“No! I want him to answer.” Both it seems.
“Well before every time you said the name ‘Lysanderoth’-”
“Lysandre.”
“Yeah that, even there. You linger on it. Not for very long, but enough. You normally speak with precision, in a way where you don’t spend any longer on a syllable than you need to. But with that name you spend time on it. You don’t want to finish saying it. You have a connection to that person, one that you treasure. And your tone on the phone call was also a massive indicator that it was someone you rather enjoyed talking with. And for an added bonus you left to be out of earshot. Something you didn’t want either of us to hear. If it had been for the League or your news show you wouldn’t bother moving so far away, but for something a bit more personal.... Well you want your privacy. Also the way you reacted to my guess earlier, that was me just doing a hail mary and I’m so happy I was right.” It’s hilarious really, but that opinion was of one. Gabrielle pulled Mafia Birb aside and the two had a hushed conversation that lasted even longer than the interview. Once that was done, a quick hug and Mafia Birb was out of there. And a knife was in here.
“I swear if you do something like that again-”
“What? Talk? I haven’t lifted a finger to her. Gotten a bit close for intimidation factor, sure, but it’s not like I’ve threatened to cause great harm. Any reference I’ve made to any kind of violence directed at her is all in context of my eventual Elite Four battle. Nothing more, nothing less.”
“Bull. Shit.”
“Up to you to believe me, doesn’t change that it’s true.”
“Oh because being truthful is so important to you?”
“Well, no, but yes, actually.”
“Then why did you hide something?” ... Was he really that obvious? “When Malva talked about a scenario where someone died in front of you, you took a second to answer.” Apparently he was. “So either you’re lying or you’re hiding something.”
“It’s Door B, but I’m the one who has the key and I’m not about to open it.”
“Can that same logic be applied to your mouth?”
“You’re really focused on my speech, aren’t you?”
“A single letter out of your mouth is as much of your voice as I will ever need to hear.”
“Well you’re going to be getting a few dictionaries’ worth.”
“And if I ask about my theories of your secret?” She wouldn’t....
“That’s not fair.”
“Oh so I can?” .... She would. Above damn it all.
“.... I liked it better when you only had the knife.”
“Well now I got a verbal one. Funny that it’s more effective. No metal arm to protect against it, I suppose.”
“Being fair, I wouldn’t feel more threatened by the knife if I had my flesh and blood arm back.”
“You’re a Ditto, you have no blood.”
“I-....” Wait, does he have blood?
“What?”
“Sorry, just don’t remember a situation in which I’ve bled, so you might actually be right about that. We’ll need to wait to meet another Being to figure out.”
“Another what? Actually, no. Don’t answer that. We’ve wasted enough time as it is, and we still need to get to Santalune. Move.” Didn’t need any more motive than that. Still have Route 22 to check in on, though. Then it’ll be time to fight the first gym. What fun it’ll be. After so long in cuffs, a good and proper fight.
What a victory it’ll be.

Data Log

Freak may be of an even greater concern than previously thought. Before I thought he was simply an eccentric sociopath. A Ditto who learned a loophole and took joy in exploiting it. But he’s not. Malva reported unusual creatures appearing on his mask, him randomly choosing a power to copy, and tales of non-existent forms of evolution.
I didn’t think it was necessary before, but this made me read his file.
I should have read it much sooner.
I know who he is, by a different name, and the power he wields. After all, we both worked for the same benefactor who was more than happy to talk about his former friend from time to time.
To keep things brief, Freak is a Being who was around when the Ultimate Weapon was first fired and somehow survived. I don’t know how, I can only guess, but no one reasoning stands out. The most likely one is that he’s copied enough regeneration powers that he could have taken the hit mostly unscathed, though the millennia of isolation seems to have done more damage.
He is from the world before, but at the same time remembers none of it. The most pressing questions now are what he is planning, has he made contact with our shared benefactor, and just how much, if anything, does he know about that day 3000 years ago.

dkjsfhsdjg elly here is having the most realistic reaction to a nuzlocke run's rules, i feel for everyone who in stories/screenshots is doing their best to integrate nuzlocke rules into natural worldbuilding because it does not sound easy ds;kgvsdgkh
“Thank you. Now one moment.” Freak’s mask displayed a spinning beach ball and a couple seconds later a mini-Freak hologram popped from the arm glove and waved at Elly. She resisted the urge to wave back to the chibi version of the creature in front of her.
awwww that's adorable, also omg elly
For her credit, Mafia Birb didn’t flinch despite how close he had gotten- and that was a knife in his face.
“Back. The fuck. Up.” Gabrielle thought she was threatening, adorable. Let’s just push that away, wouldn’t want anyone to have been hurt.
more of elly being adorable is as follows s,dfjshds she is a bean who is trying hard to defend malva and i care she
“Wait, no, stop,” Malva held the bridge of her nose. “Could you repeat that ability.”
“Thicc Fat.”
“.... Did you- Was that-” Malva gave Elly a pleading look. “Please tell me you heard the extra ‘C’.”
“I did and I hate it.”
and now i cannot unsee this ksdjfdsljgjsd oh no, thanks freak
“That may be true, but maybe you shouldn’t hide things if you don’t want that to happen.”
“Eh?”
“Luggage, I’ve been at this job for a loooong time, I know when someone tries to hide something. To your credit it was only once. But a curious once.”
that moment when malva can actually see behind freak's bravado and should prove herself to be a very formidable opponent dskhfdasjgh

No April Fools today, just a regular update
Enjoy

@sky_ Freak does tend to have that effect on people
I just love Elly reacting to how nuzlockes work, it's fun
Elly's job is to make sure Freak causes no problems and she is taking it very seriously
Malva was made both to give Elly someone to talk to and someone who can verbally spar on equal grounds with Freak, and it doing both quite well

“If you say ‘spin the wheel’ again, I’m taking the mask.”
“That’s just being mean.”
“And you deserve to be treated kindly because?”
“Because I am a good boi?”
“.... Just do the lottery thing.”
“SPIN-”
“Mask. Gone.”
“... Ok, fine, I got Binacle, happy?”
“No," They were on Route 22, Freak wanting to get as many ‘encounters’ as he could before taking on the gym. Originally he wanted to go fight as soon as he entered the town, but Viola requested that they wait until the next day because her sister wanted to film the fight. Malva’s interview kicked off even more talk about Freak and Viola’s sister was a photojournalist who wanted to be there for his opening gym battle. He wasn’t very happy about having to wait, but Elly was the one who decided when he was allowed to use his powers, so the challenge was delayed. Viola was still a leader even back when Elly started as a gym monitor, so the two were familiar. They got along, but Viola was definitely more of a work friend than anything else, and-
“Ok, gym time, let’s go.” Freak power walked past Elly, back into Santalune City. He paced in front of the gym and held up his cuffs which currently had their restraints on. “Come on, I’ve been waiting for so long.”
“Not until Alexa gets here.”
“Yes, because we absolutely need two Butterfree for this.”
“Alexa is a Vivillon, actually.”
“.... How does that work?”
“I thought you of all people would know how genetics work. Isn’t that a Ditto’s thing?”
“I’m not a Ditto and I haven’t taken any genetics courses as of ever, so elaborate.”
“It just means that one of our parents had a Scatterbug line Gijinka in their family tree somewhere.” Viola answered, walking out of her gym. “It’s pretty common knowledge, I’m surprised you don’t know it. Haven’t you met anyone who didn’t match their parents?”
“I don’t socialize. I find things get hostile. So can we please fight, or are we stalling still?”
“My sister will be here in a bit, just wait ok?”
“Sure, fine, not like I have anything else I can do. Guess I can manage my team.” His mask swapped to a screen displaying six slots, five filled with his ‘encounters’ and the last one empty. “Stinger’s a good pick to lead with, but maybe Blubber? Oregano and Inferno might have a harder time if I need to swap to them though, but no way Grumps is getting any use.... Hm, actually nice that I have time to figure this out.” Viola looked between Freak and Elly trying to figure out what he was meant.
“What’s he talking about?”
“Freak claims he can copy Gijinka even if one isn’t present for him to directly mimic.”
“He’s a Ditto, he can’t do that.”
“I want to say the same, but.... I dunno. He’s been talking about ‘encounters’. So far he’s got Drapion, Sealeo, Bayleef, Chandelure, and Binacle.”
“Hey! Don’t leak my team!”
“No.”
“Why must you be the way you are?” Freak’s eyes shifted to unamused.
“What about you?”
“I’m not who we’re discussing right now.”
“Is he always like this?” Viola asked, head turned to Freak, observing his mask display changing as he spoke.
“As far as I have experienced, yes.”
“Gabrielle, you haven’t even begun to get the full Freak experience.”
“.... Is that the wording you want to go with? Because I really want you to not have it be that.”
“Well..” His eyes changed to a slight squint as he thought more about what he said. “As of now, I will stand beside, but keeping a foot in the door for something new.” Elly would rather that foot be planted in his mouth, but before she could retort Viola’s head snapped up.
“Over here Alexa!” She waved as a Vivillon, Alexa presumably, ran over dragging a large briefcase on wheels behind her.
“Did I.... Keep you waiting?” She was out of breath from the running. Vivillon weren’t known for their stamina and that case seemed heavy. “Sorry I just needed to make sure I had everything. Bunch of wires, fully charged batteries, stuff like that.”
“I was kept waiting, yes, but that was for various reasons, but you weren’t a particularly significant one.” Back to being overly complex, Freak assured Alexa there was no issue. It was very difficult to not point out his hours and hours of griping, but Elly didn’t want to make her feel bad.
“Oh, um, good? I think that was a good thing. Anyway can I get inside so I can set everything up and then call you guys in when I’m done?”
“How long will it take?”
“Um....” Alexa looked at her sister. “Is the layout the same or have you changed it?”
“About the same.”
“Ok, shouldn’t take longer than half an hour, how’s that for you?” Elly could see the contained rage on Freak’s momentarily motionless mask.
“Yeah, no, it’s fine.” He managed to get out.
“Cool! Just wait out here and I’ll have everything set up!” Alexa dragged her case into the gym and Viola followed her, leaving Freak and Elly alone. Freak’s mask displayed a megaphone with an x overtop labeled ‘muted’, and while there was no sound Elly got the feeling he was screaming.

He was. A lot. Almost collapsed at one point because he forgot about how much he needed oxygen. But eventually his everlasting patience was rewarded and he could go into the gym. The inside was simple enough. A single room lined with art and a large hole in the middle of the floor with a rope descending down into it. So the art was there mainly for show- .... Wait. These pieces looked familiar. Yeah, he’d definitely seen them somewhere, but where.... They looked pretty old too, so where- Oh.
“What are you doing? I thought you wanted to fight Viola as soon as you could.”
“I do just… Gimme a minute.” Yeah, no doubt these were-
“Why are you so intrigued by the art here?”
“Because I last saw these countless years ago in Unova.”
“That’s not a place.”
“Yes it is. Think it’s due west, just got a few hundred miles of ocean in the way. Has no one tried to sail?”
“None successfully.”
“.... Hm” No, these were definitely from Unova, they used to be in the Bug gym painted by.... Someone who died so he doesn’t remember. Great. Oh, hey, a plaque that said they were donated by Lysanderoth. That’ll be worth asking about.
“So are you fighting this gym or what?”
“If I could have my arms and the power dial turned to five, yes.” A few quick button pushes and freedom. Theoretically he could just use what powers he could use to try and remove the cuffs, but that’d just cause more problems, so on goes the Pokemon. “Lovely. So I just go down this hole?”
“Climb down with the rope yeah- HEY!” He was already walking into the hole and falling down down down. A lot further down than expected. Was their plan to tire people out by having them hold onto the rope for an hour? Or was it to test their will to see if they bothered going all the way to the bottom? These thoughts were interrupted when he hit something, sank down and then got thrown up again. Did they install a pit with a trampoline? A few more bounces later and he could stand up. Through the glow of his mask, he could see that he was on a comically oversized web.
“Is the lighting for dramatic effect or am I fighting blind? My face is literally glowing, so I feel like this might be a tad unfair if option two.” In response the lights turned on and Viola stood on a little porch with Alexa next to her with a camera set up. Looking around, he could see smaller ones set up all over. Neat.
“Ok, Challenger Freak,” Eh, seven out of ten. She’s trying to make it a name, but there’s something that she got caught on when she said it in full. Still a nice effort. “As per the league rules you will fight myself and...” She counted a few figures hiding above the arena, “Four others of my choosing. Once you’ve defeated all of us then you will have earned the First Badge. Understood?”
“YES!”
“Then let the gym battle commence!” A shadow flew into the web ring and he could sense it was Leering at him. But it was moving in a straight line, so just hit it with a Knock Off. Well, it’s more a punch, but that’s how it worked.
“OW! ARCEUS CHIRST! Did you have to go for the face?! Use a move at least, asshole!” Blue skin and red wings with a distinct shape gave her away as a Salamence. One now holding her pretty broken nose.
“That was a Knock Off.”
“I don’t know that move, you copycat son of a bitch.”
“I’m using a Drapion.”
“That’s not how Imposter works, ya Dit.”
“IAMNOTADITTO!”
“Yes, you are, you- OW!” He just punched her with a Knock Off before she could try to get another word out. This wasn’t a very exciting start- Oh wait, no, that’s a Headbutt. Her using it while flying to send him wheeling over to the edge of the ring. 21/36 HP, so he can take another as for her-
“Viola! Can I get a Potion?!” There was a lot of grumbling from around the place, but Viola threw a can to Mence who bit into it and sucked the juice out. Her bleeding stopped almost instantly. That was wildly unfair, but that just meant more fun for him! She glared, a normal glare not the move, and flew full speed at him. With a large Dragon barreling towards him, there was only one thing to do. He jumped, and she flew into the webbing railing, getting tangled up in the threads. “Hey- What- Let me out!”
“I have a better idea,” And switch to Blubber. He inhaled as there was a brief look of confusion on Mence’s face until she felt the cold air surround him. “Let it go.” Powder Snow. Normally not that great, but to a quad weak it didn’t matter. Salamence was solidly frozen. One down. “NEXT!” A sombrero-wearing duck, probably a Ludicolo, dropped down and started to dance, trying to make the web unstable enough so he couldn’t get a good footing. She was even doing a pretty good job at it. “Well that’s nice to see you put in the effort Boogie Nights, but if I can’t move then I won’t bother trying to.” Equip Stinger and finger guns time. Literally. He could see Alexa zoom in as he took off his left glove and pointed at Boogie Nights. “BANG BANG BANG!” Three Pin Missiles fired off from his fingertip and hit the duck, the third turning out to be a crit, and thank Above for Sniper. Two down, two more until Viola herself. “WHO’S NEXT!?” His response was a massive fist coming down next to him. A Golurk, almost nine feet tall and body glowing with energy. They didn’t bother with banter, simply starting to swing at him over and over. “Strong silent type? No slowing down? You don’t need to-ACK!” He got hit with an Astonish, nothing too harmful, but made him flinch a bit. “Ok, fine, geez.” Activating Oregano, and his left hand opened to unleash a Razor Leaf into the giant’s chest pushing them back. “Try this!” He made a few leaves spin around his arm and uppercutted Silent Type for the KO. And next up is...
“You a Drapion?” A large tail, purple and pink color scheme, and those eyes. Either Drapion or she’s got a very skilled makeup department.
“Yes. And I’m trying to figure out how you copied me.”
“I AM NOT-” Stop. Breath. “Ok, fuck it, not gonna bother. Mirror match is fun though.” They circled a bit but he got tired of waiting and charged in, the two hitting each other with Knock Off. This went on for a bit, the two trading blows with the occasional Pin Missile pot shot. “.... Ok, I think I know what I gotta do here.” He put his left glove and started to bounce up and down on the web. Alexa leaned so far forward she almost fell off her balcony while trying to zoom in on him. “If you want to see what’s next, you better get a camera that can track high speeds, Shutterbug!”
“Oh! Yeah, one sec,” She went back and reappeared with a new camera. “Go!”
“Lovely,” He looked at his graciously patient opponent. “Are you ready?”
“Of course.” Mirror Match responded. “Let’s see if you can do anything with your own power.” She took a defensive position as he bounced higher and higher. Then when he bounced high enough to gain decent velocity, he angled his bounce and shot into the web railings and bounced off of those as well. Mirror Match dodged, but he just kept flying past her and ricocheted off another part of the railing, only gaining more speed. Faster and faster, he oriented himself to bullet towards Mirror Match, using Inferno to shoot fire and accelerate even more. “MUDA!” He screamed as he pulled his metal fist back and punched Mirror Match in the gut at speeds that could make it qualify as a Mach Punch. To her credit, the Drapion tried to stand, but the attack was too much and she fell over. “I do believe that was the four, so Viola if you would be so kind-”
“I concede.”
“..... eh?”
“WHAT?!” Alexa almost dropped her camera out of surprise. “B-but why?”
“Alexa, he took down four of my trainers without breaking a sweat. Also he has a Chandelure power apparently, so not like I’m much use against that.” Viola threw down a rope for him to climb onto the balcony. “That was quite impressive, Freak. You’re already on Clemont’s level easily, and I’m not one for fighting losing battles, so congrats on winning your first gym.”
“..... I’m tilted, but impressed. Usually people still want to fight me, thinking they’re the one who will stop my terror yadda yadda.” He pulled himself up onto the platform. “Can still respect knowing when not to fight.”
“Then here is the First badge.” Viola held out a piece of metal stylized to be a ring with the number one in the middle and Butterfree wings attached. “Do you have your badge case?”
“Actually have my own thing,” He took the badge and slipped off his jacket. “Made a few sections here.” He held it out and showed eight divots the size of the badges around his mechanical bicep and snapped the First Badge into place. “Thought it would be fun.”
“The whole thing is metal?” Alexa was taking several pictures of it from every angle she could. “How does it work?”
“It works because I want it to. Yes that’s actually how it works, it can simply channel my power.”
“.... How well can it do that?” Viola asked while grabbing Alexa’s arm and pulling her away from him.
“Depends on what move I use. Why- Oh right, the murder that I didn’t do. Well again it varies depending on what I need it to do, but since it operates using my power, so long as the power is sealed the arm is just decoration. Mostly, anyway,” Viola pushed Alexa further away and looked him right in the eyes.
“I am going to call Elly to retrieve you. You stay here and do nothing. Alexa, follow me.”
“Wha- But I still want to get some casual shots. Just some pics of him when he’s at rest.”
“What am I, wildlife?”
“If all I got were action shots, that’d be boring.”
“Fair enough.”
“.... Ok, fine, you can stay with him. Just... keep a safe distance.” Not that there was really one where he was concerned, but if it made the gym leader feel better, then he’d roll with it. More time to enjoy his hands being free.

Elly flicked the restraints back on and Freak let out a sigh when his arms got locked together. “Gabrielle, must we always go through this song and dance-”
“Yes. Until your challenge is done then you will only be unrestrained during gym battles and a select few other occasions.” She wasn’t here to humor him. “Thank you for your time Viola, good luck with the other challengers.”
“Thanks, Elly. Keep your eye on him, he’s got a lot of hidden tricks.” Alexa had excitedly talked about Freak turning himself into a living pinball and it sounded like something out of a cartoon, but Viola confirmed it. So either Freak was a genius or a very lucky moron. Both were equally plausible. The League will probably want a report on Freak’s first gym battle. Should she call now, or wait for Malva to send a message? Could the power glove text? That’ll have to be figured out later. Elly thanked Viola for her time and dragged Freak away from the gym.
“Next is Route Four, so get your encounter thing and we’ll see if we can make it to Lumiose before sunset.”
“No time for a rest?”
“When we get to Lumiose.”
“Fine. SPINTHEWHEEL!” Arceus damn it. “Gurdurr. Yeah I can work with this- Oh, shit, did I remember to turn on impossible evos? Hope I did, it’ll be awkward being a Gurdurr for the whole thing. On the team it goes, and boxing Binacle.” Elly wanted to ask about ‘impossible evos’ but bit her tongue. Ow.
Route Four was a nice place to walk through and spend an afternoon. Tall yellow flowers flow in the wind and hedge mazes stand on either side of the main path. One could have fun racing another through the different courses to see who found their way out first. But now there was no time for that. A quick pace brought the city of Lumiose into view within the hour, Lumiose Tower serving as a landmark for miles.
“Oh, hey, is the gym still there?”
“... At the Tower?”
“Yeah. It was the gym before, just wondering if they changed it.”
“.... No one has been in the tower for decades, it’s a relic. It’s been sealed off because of something inside. Whoever went in, never came out.” As much as it sounded like an urban legend, Elly had looked into the history of the Tower and the rumors were more fact than she would’ve liked.
“And they haven’t tried tearing it down?”
“Something always went wrong when they tried. Eventually they just decided to let it stay and built a fence around it. The only people who try to sneak in now are tourists.”
“Hm.”
“I am not letting you anywhere near it, understand?”
“Yes, mother dear.”
“.... Don’t ever call me that again.”
“Can I go with ‘Elly dear’?” Freak’s voice was a perfect mimic of Malva’s but in a tone that made Elly incredibly uncomfortable.
“Yes, but don’t say it like that.”
“Oh, but I thought you would rather enjoy it. El-ly-dear.” So much of that was just wrong. He’s using her voice, her nickname for Elly, and the emphasis on the syllables. It was something that got to Elly like nothing else and she snapped.
“Ok, give me that.” She grabbed at his mask. Maybe this would be enough to get him to shut it.
“Hey! No! Hands off!” He flailed his arms to get her away, but couldn’t grab his mask back when she did rip it off. Freak screeched and covered his face with his arms. She flipped the mask over and the inside was... blank. It was a smooth surface inside, no wires or anything. She held it up to her face and nothing happened.
“How does this work?”
“GIVE IT BACK!” Freak ran into her trying to grab his mask back. She opened her mouth to tell him to back the fuck off, but stopped at seeing his face. His eyes were an immediate stand out. Ditto had small black eyes, but his weren’t. They were the same green as they were displayed on the mask, but they were all green. No whites or irises or pupils, just all the same neon green. And his teeth. Chipped and cracked into sharp points.... Just like his mask. Elly dropped the mask and Freak put it on, the eyes lighting up and jumping to her. They didn’t change to express his emotions, just staying completely still as he spoke. “Are you happy? Did you get what you wanted, Gabrielle?”
“N-no. I didn’t- Your teeth- What happened?”
“Something. I don’t want to talk about it, so don’t fucking ask. Eyes have always been a solid color though, nothing changed there. Well, the color has, but that’s not important.” He turned away from her and stood like that without talking for a bit. “So. Are we moving?”
“.... Yeah, shouldn’t be that much further.” Freak shuffled to not face Elly and continued walking to the city. Why did she do that? He might have killed that Seviper, but that didn’t justify her actions. Her job required her to stay calm and focused, but she broke. Of course Freak was going to provoke her, he’s a psychopath, but she needed to steel herself. Even if he used Malva to taunt her. But she couldn’t stop thinking about the mask and his face. Freak had talked about how he thought that appearances influenced how people perceive one another so he hid his face. But his mask was a simplified version of it. He also said he doesn’t like lying, so maybe it was a form of compromise? He’s not deceiving people about how he looked, but the mask made it so he was showing his face as he wanted it to be seen. So people saw a face that he chose instead of the one he was forced to have. His teeth were still vivid in her mind. The eyes weren’t that outstanding now that the initial shock was over. Many Pokemon have highly usual eyes, her own included, it was just that Freak’s weren’t usual for Ditto, and the teeth were something else. They weren’t natural, but also weren’t cut into sharp points on purpose. Something happened to him that broke his teeth into their new shape, but was it the same thing that took his arm, or was that a separate incident?
“I’m not answering.” Freak’s voice was so sudden it took Elly a moment to realize he was talking to her. “You’re thinking about what could’ve caused me to look like this. What crafted my winning smile into what you saw. I’m not telling you, so stop thinking.”
“.... Can I ask about how the mask works? Because to me it just looked like a piece of plastic.”
“It channels my power but I also gave it some of its own. That’s how it functions even with these things attached.” He raised his arms above his head to show the cuffs. “But really all it does is track my eye movement and reads my lips plus a few other things.”
“That doesn’t explain half of what it does.”
“Well that’s all you’re getting, so enjoy.” He turned just to bow in a mock fashion then spun back to face the city. So far Freak had been open about everything. Now this was something he was refusing to give even a hint about. The thought of Freak having something so dark he refused to speak about it was much more disturbing than anything he actually said.

He thought Gabrielle was a lot of things, but now ‘bitch’ seemed to be the leading description. Yeah, just take off his mask, nothing wrong with that! Look into his eyes and at his mouth as he cried for her to give back one of the few things that was actually his. Now he was actually mad. Not even literally being accused of murder did that, but somehow Gabrielle pulled it off. Like she did his mask. He knew he shouldn’t be so focused, but it’s rare someone actually did something to piss him off on purpose. Was he in the wrong for provoking her in the first place? Not really, she already treated him like he was guilty of a crime he hadn’t even been tried for, so if she was already going to hate him he might as well give her an actual motive from actions he actually took. Maybe he will follow through with that idea of inspecting the tower, even powerless he could probably improvise past whatever security systems they had in place. The only one who wanted to keep an eye on him was Gabrielle, and he could escape her just by waiting for her to get on the phone with Mafia Birb. Hiding himself might be difficult, glowing eyes and all, but it’s a big city not like there aren’t famous people everywhere so why would he call attention.
“There’s going to be press at the city entrance, so just walk through, don’t entertain them.”
“Define ‘entertain’.”
“Don’t respond to anything they say, I don’t want you doing something that would make you a bigger target. It is part of my job to protect you, even if neither of us want me to. So antagonizing people could provoke more people and that puts both of us in danger.” Well he knew what he was about to do. “Don’t.”
“Gabrielle, you may seal my arms, but my mouth is unclosable.” ... Wait was ‘unclosable’ a word? Eh, if not then he just made it one.
“..... Just try.”
“We’ll see.” Gabrielle could only let out a frustrated sigh and motion for him to keep moving. Just as she predicted, several Gijinka with cameras and lights stood at the gates to the city seemingly already busy with other gym challengers who arrived ahead of them. Three stood out; a Ninjask, Greninja, and Zweilous. Ninjask was doing midair acrobatics to show off his agility. Greninja was off by himself, but conveniently in a place where cameras could see him pose in his 2edgy4u style. And the Zweilous was just loud, the two heads trying to drown out the other on which one put in the most work. None seemed all that interesting, Ninjask would fall to a single Flame Burst, Zweilous would get smacked by a Low Kick, and Greninja would be easy with a couple Razor Leafs. It took a bit, but one of the reporters noticed him and shouted to his camera guy to follow. What followed was a bit of a stampede as the news people rushed to shove a mic at his mask to probably ask the same boring questions. Or Gabrielle was about to save him. She spread her wings out to block anyone from getting close to him.
“Challenger Freak is not taking any questions at this time. Please forward any questions you have to the League itself.” This didn’t stop them from asking anyway, but it was a nice sentiment.
“Does your arrival here mean you’ve defeated Viola?”
“How serious was your gym battle?”
“Did you go into the gym planning to cause serious damage?” Ok that last one was too stupid to ignore.
“Yes.” With the greatest amount of sarcasm he could produce. “Me, the suspected murderer, went into a gym to cause indescribable damage. I fully intended to go in and try to inflict as much non-lethal harm as physically possible. That is absolutely something I planned out and executed. What a stunning display of intellect and deduction you have shown us all today.” The guy who asked backed down and made room for other people. That one was certainly not going to try something like that again. The other reporters kept asking him questions, none quite as stupid, but none that were interesting enough to warrant his attention with the risk of an angry Togekiss directly in front of him. Gabrielle flapped her wings as she walked forward to clear a path, stopping when the Ninjask gym challenger refused to move.
“Challenger, I will ask you to please stop blocking our path.”
“How about no? That guy’s a killer-”
“Accused killer.” He cut in, not in the mood for false claims.
“No one cares.” Well that was just rude. “And there’s no way we’re just going to let him into Lumiose.”
“I will warn you that I will guard against any harm you may intend towards the challenger.”
“Oh, come on! You can’t be this dedicated to a bunch of suits. Is he really worth it?”
“Given that I very much like my job, yes.” He sensed an asterisk, but that was more for a bonus, she did seem to enjoy working for the League. “And I’m not about to put my competence into question because you feel differently from what the League has decided. Now I ask once again. Get out of my way.” That last bit was practically a snarl, didn’t know Togekiss could learn it, and was enough to get Ninny-jackass to step aside. He bowed in mockery as they passed the Bug type and Gabrielle grabbed him to walk in front again. “We’ll be going to the League building and you will be put in confinement for the rest of the day. Tomorrow you’ll get to look around the city if you want and then we’ll start heading towards the next gym.”
“I’ll probably want to look around-”
“Nowhere near the tower.”
“........ Ok, fine, but still want to look around. We got all sorts of stores here that I want to look at. Maybe a cafe or two. Try out some coffee.” That’s an interesting face. “What?”
“The idea of you with any amount of caffeine is terrifying.”
“You should see me on Red Bull.”
“I don’t know what-”
“It’s an energy drink.”
“How do you come up with this stuff?”
“I think I was a writer at one point and this is just the residual creativity left over from that era. Though it’s not really creative just referencing stuff that already exists.... Or rather ‘existed’ by this point.”
“..... Yeah, don’t think I’m listening to anymore of this today.” Gabrielle grabbed his metal arm and led him through the busy streets of Lumiose City, getting several head turns and phones taking pictures. He kept his eyes on the Tower. Windows were broken, and no lights were on, but he knew there was something hidden inside. He will get inside that place and see what’s inside. Maybe not now, but definitely when he returns to take on the gym. It’ll be a fun night.

Data Log

Curious. Of all things, I didn’t expect Freak to recall the paintings. I had them kept in storage and Lysandre happened to be around when I was sorting through junk. He took a fancy and since I only had them in case I wanted to try and decorate, I let him borrow them. Now they’re in a display in Viola’s gym, how appropriate. How incredibly fortunate his kickback doesn’t let him remember people who died. I might be able to use that to spin a story quite nicely.

Though something urgent will take a greater priority than monitoring Freak for now. Patient Zero is missing. They’ve been taken from my lab and I don’t know when it was done. I know precisely who did this, which is why I can’t ask for help until I’ve come up with a good cover. Or maybe I can ask to keep things secret because it’s simply something that Lysandre doesn’t need to stress about. These grunts worship him, so if I say that it’s actually a good thing for Lysandre to not know about the outing then they’ll do it no problem. I can justify my reasons to tell Lysandre later. Finding Patient Zero is of utmost importance. No one else can be allowed to learn who they are, and worse, they can’t be allowed to learn about this world.

“Malva, that is a terrible idea.”
“I know, but he wants to meet Freak, and he’s in Lumiose to talk with Diantha already so it’s a bit late to try and tell him no.”
“Ok, but how necessary is this? Is this really of the utmost importance to him of everyone?”
“Lysandre wants to meet with the person who might’ve killed an employee of his, there is little more important to him.” Elly was waiting in the lobby of the Lumiose City League building for Freak to be retrieved when Malva had called the power glove. Lysandre was waiting in his company’s cafe and contacted the League after he got word of Freak’s presence. Elly desperately wanted to avoid any kind of meeting between the two. Lysandre’s justified anger would not match well with Freak’s inability to take anything seriously. If she was lucky, it would only end with Lysandre punching Freak and no rebuttal from the latter. “I could tag along if you want.”
“I’m good,” She wasn’t and desperately wanted her friend with her, but with just Freak and Lysandre there would be a lot of provocation and Malva’s quips might tip things in an unfortunate direction. “Between myself and the Champion I think things will be manageable.”
“Alright, but don’t hesitate to give me a ring if things start going south.”
“If things get that bad I think you’ll know long before I call you.”
“Fair enough. Good luck, Elly dear.” The call ended and Elly let her arm down. Holding it up for a conversation was a lot more tiring than expected. After a couple more minutes of waiting, League employees arrived escorting Freak. Well more following him, none of them wanted to be anywhere near him.
“So we heading to Cyllage now? Should probably head out early, think we have a cave between us and-”
“Someone has requested your presence.”
“Really?”
“Yes.”
“.... It’s Lysandroth isn’t it? No one else would willingly want to meet me and be allowed by you to do so. If it was Mafia Birb, she’d already be here, no need to let you know beforehand.” She had forgotten his dumb nickname for Lysandre.
“Yes. We’ll be going to Lysandre Cafe where-”
“Wait wait wait wait wait wait. He has his own personal cafe? And he named it after himself? I can understand his business, but a cafe?!”
“The champion will also be there, so if you have any sense of decency you won’t cause any problems or be rude.”
“Gabrielle, we both know that I have none of the first, and am near incapable of being the second.” He paused for a second for some reason and let out an annoyed shout. “Damn it, I wanted to avoid meeting the champion. I don’t like spoilers for my fights, it’s not fun.”
“I will be honest, I don’t think you’d be able to not be spoiled on that.”
“I know, but.... Still, not fun to learn ahead of time.”
“Well better to not delay, come on.” She motioned for him to start walking, but he didn’t move. “...... Are you really going to stall?”
“No, it’s just that I have literally no idea where anything is here, so asking me to lead is an absolutely terrible idea. Just lead, my arms are locked and you hold the only key, so I’m not going to run, you should know this by now,” That was fair, so she moved in front of him and went they were out of the building she spread her wings so people were forced to move to the side and none could get near Freak. She didn’t think he would try to harm them, but better safe than sorry. A bit of maneuvering and a non-zero number of wrong turns later, and they got to a flame red cafe tucked away in one of the side streets. Not completely hidden, but you were unlikely to spot it unless you were already looking for it. “I see it’s got quite a bit of flare.”
“He’s rather fond of the color,” Before they entered, Elly turned and looked Freak in the eye. “Don’t call him ‘Lysandroth’.”
“Depends on how he says my name.”
“Why?”
“If he doesn’t say my name like a name, then I’m not calling him by his.”
“...... Is that why you keep calling me ‘Gabrielle’?”
“Yeah, you keep saying it like a noun. Not a proper one, just as a thing. You still only see me as a ‘thing’ and not a ‘person’. As a freak and not as Freak. So until you get my name right, or are in a pissed off mood, I won’t get yours right.” She dwelled on that a bit. Not for long, but enough to think maybe he actually had some kind internal reasoning. But that was something to be considered later. She opened the door and heard a conversation already in progress.
“I’ve already talked about it with my agent, and he refuses to seriously consider me in any role besides the usual. He just goes on and on about-”
“I think I can guess. ‘But Diantha, darling, you’re absolutely stunning in your usual roles, why would you ever want to step outside your comfort zone when what you already do has been working out so well?’. Or something along those lines.”
“You know it’s almost scary how accurately you guessed that.”
“I mean you are amazing in your usual roles, but that’s no excuse for you to be stuck in them.”
“I just want to be good for once. Not as a femme fatal, but as an actual good person with no ulterior motives. I know everyone enjoys a good villain, sometimes a bit too much, but I feel like if I do another piercing glare my eyes will get stuck like that.” Elly couldn’t bring herself to interrupt. At the only occupied table sat a gorgeous Absol, white hair smooth as silk, skin like the night sky without any stars, and red eyes that seemed to look right past her own. Across from her was someone who radiated warmth from both his his thick yellow and red mane and his welcoming expression and calming blue eyes. He held a tea cup gently in his hand, contrasting with the wall of muscle the Pyroar has sculpted himself into. Elly cleared her throat and tried not to panic as together the Champion of Kalos and the CEO of Lysandre Corp, the two most powerful Gijinka in the whole region, turned to her.
“Hello, Champion Diantha and Mr Lysandre, I’m Elly from the Pokemon League-”
“Ah, yes, you’re the chaperone appointed by the League, correct?” Diantha spoke first while Lysandre, understanding what Elly’s presence meant, looked at the area behind her. “I believe you are friends with Malva, she’s mentioned you before.” Wait, Malva mentioned her to the Champion? What?! “I would love to have a talk, but... I feel like this isn’t the time.”
“.... Is that him?” Lysandre nodded in Freak’s direction who was currently leaning back in a chair and.... What was he doing? Was he playing a game on his mask? “.... Bring him over here- Actually, no. I’ll go myself.” The friendly warmth that he had before was gone, now turned into a heat of barely contained rage. He stood up and walked across the cafe floor. “... So. You are Freak.”

Gabrielle was taking a while, so he was checking on his team. He got a bonus encounter for the city, a Chespin, and he was wondering what to do with it. Currently Bayleef was his grass type, but then again it had a bad nature and a not great moveset. He’d probably be able to level Chespin up enough to evolve, so he’ll put it in front for now.
“So. You are Freak.”
“... Wow you have got to hate me,” In front of him was whatever the complete opposite of a chonker was. Sir Lysandroth. “Been a while since someone has said my name like that.”
“How did I say it?”
“Well....” He got up and talked as he walked in a circle around the big cat. “Some say my name as a noun, not recognizing it as a name. Some do say it as a name, but those are few and far between, credit to Miss Champion over there for managing to deliver it sincerely.” He bowed in Diantha’s direction and spun back into his pacing. “And then there’s you. Saying it like a title.” He stood up on the chair he just got out of to get more in Lysandroth’s face and was amazed at the amount of rage it held. “You truly believe it is a word that reflects every piece of me. You don’t think the word describes me. You think I describe the word.”
“.... Get off the chair.” He stepped up onto a table.
“Yeah, that’s better. We’re eye level now, that’ll save my neck a lot of stress.” Now that anger was shifting to more irritation.
“Is this behavior common for him?” Lysandroth spoke to Gabrielle but didn’t take his eyes off of him.
“Yes. Um... Try not to react much.”
“Gabrielle, I think Sir Lysandroth is more than capable of keeping his temper.”
“..... What did he call me?”
“He does that too, and I don’t know why.”
“What? He’s calling me a title, so I gave him his. Equivalent exchange and all that.”
“Equivalent exchange is a term with proper usage, and that was not it.” Ok, now’s the time to try and calm things down. He jumped off the table and took a better look at the Champion. She looked regal, definitely fitting of her position, but one thing drew his intention. “Where are you staring?”
“Is that what I think it is?” He tapped his chest where Diantha had two very specific jewels hanging off a necklace. “... Can’t be.” A Key Stone and a Mega Stone. Diantha held them up for him to get a better look.
“I received the Key Stone when I became Champion, and the Mega Stone I inherited from my mother. It’s a well kept secret of what the two do together, but your reaction suggests that you somehow know it.” Mega Evolution. Which shouldn’t be possible now.
“Yes, Key Stone plus appropriate Mega Stone equals a Mega Evolution, a temporary evolution which provided great power. But it requires two to tango, so how is it possible that you can do it alone?”
“.... Two to what?” Diantha was clearly lost.
"Are you even capable of coherent thought?" And Lysandroth was getting very done with him.
“Nevermind, there’s no one alive who it would make sense to. Just a bit surprised to still see Mega Evolution still being a thing. Well now that I think about it, not too surprising. Kalos was the origin point. Then Hoenn seemed to get into it, and there was a theory about it being able to function with something in Alola but... None of you are following me.”
“Not at all.” Well at least Gabrielle wasn’t changing.
“.... Hm.” Well that was going to need a lot of thinking to figure out.
“If you have finished rambling, I have something to say.” Oh right. Lysandroth was pissed at him for false reasons. “You may think that simply because you are participating in the League challenge, that you don’t have to face the consequences for your action, but I assure you-.”
“My arms. Are chained,” Yeah he’s interrupting, but who’s going to stop him? “My powers. Are under lock. What about this suggests that I have dealt with no consequences for a thing I didn’t even do?”
“Why do you even deny it? There is no way that once the investigation resumes that you will simply walk away.”
“Lysandre!” Diantha stood up to bring to focus onto her. “I know your pain, but do consider that Freak hasn’t been found guilty of anything, he hasn’t even been tried! He might be innocent for all you know.”
“An innocent who just so happened to be around the murder scene and doesn’t have an alibi?”
“The point is that even how things stand, he is innocent until proven guilty. There may be more to this story than we know.”
“This isn’t a movie script Diantha! There isn’t always some third act reveal that explains everything.”
“And just because you feel that something is true doesn’t make it so. Your employee’s death-”
“She had a name and it was Ebony.” oh. Lysandre genuinely cared about the departed. His voice almost cracked there.... If it weren’t for the incredible hostility from that death stare he redirected to his original target, then he might’ve gotten more sympathy. “Or is something like that too trivial for a monster like you?”
“Even if I knew her before her death, I wouldn’t have known. I can’t remember the dead, ok?! I know it’s hard to believe, but I don’t.”
“And why should we believe you?” Lysandroth used his frame for as much intimidation as possible. Didn’t have much effect but points for trying.
“Because I don’t lie. I don’t remember people who die and that’s the truth.”
“Even for the ones you kill?” ........ shit. Shit. FUCK! The literal one question he could not answer. Not because he hadn’t killed anyone ever, but because he had. And that was a secret no one got to know. “So there’s more to your supposed kickback.”
“Yes, but the way you phrased that makes it sound like you don’t believe that I have a power. I don’t want to bother if you think I’m lying.”
“I don’t think you’re lying, but you are hiding something. And I will figure out what it is, and I will see you face consequences for it along with your other crimes.”
“And I will enjoy not facing them. Now are we done? I want to get to the next gym.” Maybe a bit rude, but right now he was being pushed to a cliff he didn’t want to jump off. There was nothing he could give Sir Lysandroth. The two stared at each other waiting for someone to break the silence. What did was Gabrielle’s power glove ringing.
“Hello, Elly dear, hope I’m not interrupting anything important.”
“Um, hi, Malva. And um... A bit.”
“Oh, are you still in Lysandre Cafe?”
“Yeah.”
“... Is that why the luggage is quiet?”
“Yyeah.”
“And the two are currently about to kill the other?”
“Yyyyeah.”
“Alright, um... Crap, didn’t mean to break in, but since I’m here, just a quick heads up. Your next stop once you leave Lumiose is Route Five and then Glittering Cave, and it’s the cave that needs your attention. Apparently some suspicious guys in red suits are wandering the area, so keep an eye out for them. They’re probably nothing to worry about, but still.”
“Thank you Malva.”
“Any time, Elly dear.” The call ended and the silence continued on.
“.....” Lysandroth finally walked away and sat back down in his chair. “Take him. I apologize for this being our first encounter, Elly, Malva sings your praises and I wanted to have a proper conversation with you but.... I don’t think now is the time for that,” He pulled out his phone and held it up to the power arm until a beep sounded. “If you ever have tech problems, feel free to contact me directly. I’ll speak with our lead engineer and get back to you as quickly as possible.”
“Oh, um, thank you.”
“Thank me by staying sane and by stopping here again when you return to Lumiose.”
“I will remember that.” A bit of awkward silence later and Gabrielle took it as a signal to grab and leave. “Did you want him to attack you?” She half yelled once they were outside.
“Would’ve livened things up a bit.”
“Do you have any idea what kind of position Lysandre is in thanks to you?”
“Well that’s awfully assumptive of you.”
“His reaction to and fighting against your participation was the headline for days, how do you not know what he’s been dealing with?”
“It’s almost as though I was in solitary confinement with no access to the outside world.”
“..... Point is, he’s gone through a lot since the incident, and you aren’t helping.”
“I don’t know how I could.”
“Not antagonizing him for starters.”
“No, there’s really nothing he could have done, trust me,” Diantha had followed them out. Neat. “If he played nice Lysandre would’ve tried his hardest to break the act, so Freak acting as expected was probably a better choice. The chair to table thing was a bit too extra, however.”
“Nothing is too extra.”
“You’ve never had to deal with over-acting new talents- ah, what am I doing, you two should be on your way.”
“No, you’re fine, don’t worry,” Gabrielle practically bursted out. “But, um, yeah we probably should head out.”
“Good luck in your adventures,” Diantha said as she walked back into the crimson cafe to work on damage control presumably.
“You have her on a bit of a pedestal don’t you?”
“She is the frickin’ CHAMPION!”
“So you’ll put me on a similar one when I beat her?” That was a face. “Nevermind, let’s leave before Lysandroth challenges me to a cage match.”

“WHEEL SPIN!” Freak shouted when they exited the city and walked onto Route Five. “Samurott. Neat. Don’t really need it, got Sealeo, so box it goes.”
“... Anything else before we go into the cave? Once we go in we won’t stop until we’re out on the other side.”
“Oh, gonna get a cave encounter, but no nothing before.”
“Let’s go then.” Route Five was almost too small to be called a route. Only a small skate park stood out among the worn out path and foliage.
“Should we be worried about the suits people?”
“I think I can handle anything they throw at me. They might not even be here anymore.” A bit optimistic, but Elly really did not want to deal with shady people right now. If they somehow grabbed Freak she would need to save him and that’s not something she wanted to do. When they got to the cave she pulled out a flashlight from her upper left pocket and shined it in. As far as she could see it was empty but a turn up ahead meant she couldn’t see in very far. “Hm. We may have to take it slow, since there’s no way to tell what’s inside and I’m not letting you hold the light.”
“I mean I got highbeams.”
“..... You what?”
“One moment.” He walked into the cave and after a pause Freak’s eyes lit up the entire area in a green light. “There we go. This work?”
“So long as you don’t look at me, yes.”
“Alright,” She pocketed her flashlight and motioned for Freak to move deeper into the cave.
“Oh right, encounter. Spin the wheel! Exeggutor. Eh, sure. But box.” Freak’s dumb system done, the walk continued in silence. For a place called Glittering Cave there didn’t seem to be a lot of glittering. Maybe the place was once filled with gems and other precious things, but they’ve long since been mined out and sold. Now all that was left were barren walls with the occasional side tunnel where a vein was found. Blank walls that kept on stretching yet were a bit too confined. The tunnels usually had room for two medium sized people to comfortably walk side by side, but they were too small for Elly to spread her wings properly. The changing widths of the carved out halls didn’t help. “Room up ahead.” Freak alerted. The ‘room’ was more a refurbished existing pocket in the rock. There were benches chiseled out of the walls, presumably done by the workers who had to mine down here for hours, and a couple abandoned minecarts. “Ow.”
“What?” Elly walked over to see what Freak was doing.
“Just noticed an oil lamp here and poked it.” He answered while putting his glove back on.
“Why?”
“Not the point. What I’m getting at is that it’s hot. So it was just on.”
“Which means whoever was using it is close.” The suits. Elly reached for her knife, but was hit in the shoulder by something. “Ow!” What direction- poof CRACK! A rock. She had been hit by a rock. This one hit her head and the room started to spin, but she managed to stay on her feet.
“Hey hey hey, let’s just calm down here.” A deep voice echoed from somewhere in the area, but Elly couldn’t focus enough to tell from where and by Freak’s head turning he wasn’t sure either.
“You just gave her a mild concussion, I think we’re past ‘calming down’.” Freak had turned off his high beams, possibly to help them hide, and was talking with whoever just attacked her. “I can’t see you but those were definitely rocks. Given that two were enough to floor her and that little poof sound before impact… Rhyperior is my guess, shooting them from those weird palm holes,” Ok, good. Elly starts charging an Aura Sphere, hoping that Freak can keep the distraction. BAM! The next rock hit her shin and she dropped to the ground.
“None of that, sorry. And you, murderer,” The voice was focused on Freak, but Elly was in too much pain and too disoriented to even try to charge another move. “I’ve heard about your actions at the opening ceremony. You’re not helpless with those cuffs, but I’m not letting her use that glove.” That option hadn’t entered Elly’s mind until then. Could she try and use the glove to let Freak use a power? No, the voice knew what he was doing, if she tried she would just get hit with another rock. But she couldn’t just sit there.
“So what’re you people up to? Nothing good is my guess. I will be honest if you had just sat here in the open that would’ve been a lot less suspicious than turning off your lamp. Why did you even have it on... Ok think I know,” Come on, he had to be stalling for time, for her to do something. Maybe she should risk activating the glove. Once she gave Freak a power he could sort things out. But what were the chances he’d actually save her once he beat the suit? “You obviously can see me, but that doesn’t explain how you can see Gabrielle, my mask glows but she’s got nothing shiny on her. So you’ve got your own stuff to wear, but maybe it hurts your eyes, screens and all that, so some simple firelight was preferable. How close am I getting?” Damn it, there was no time to weigh risks, the voice had shown clear hostility, and at least with Freak a gamble was even possible. Elly curled up and hid her arms from view and slowly moved to use the glove. Just as she was about to turn the powers dial, a foot came down and crushed her left hand.
“AAAAHHHH!” The other foot was placed on her head, so she couldn’t turn it to see who was standing on her.
“And whaddya think ya doin’ there, eh?” The new voice used his foot to grind Elly’s hand into the cave floor. “Ya think ya can be all sneaky-like? Not how that works.”
“About time, did you find Patient Zero?”
“Yep. And a whooooole lot more. Come and checkit.”
“And what about these two?”
“Bring them along, we can sort them out later.”
“Where are we putting them?”
“Eh, we can store them with the patient, it’ll make sense later.”
“Who.... who are you?” Elly managed to gasp out through the pain.
“Yeah, like we’d just tell ya.”
“Put her to sleep, we need to do some work to secure her.”
“What about the killa?”
“He won’t try anything while we hold her. Right?”
“She is literally the key to my freedom. Also between the rock wall and the status nightmare that one is I don’t think I have much chance of winning.”
“Smart sociopath. Now then,” The one holding Elly down squatted down and chuckled. “Night night.” A sound of the second voice exhaling something and Elly was out.

Fenice had no idea what to do when the guy with ridiculous ball hair found them. They had been left there since the tall snake lady woke them up and moved them to a ‘safe place’. Lovely how that’s working out. They were moved from one odd room with medical equipment to this one. A safe room in a freaking CAVE hidden behind a false door that blended in with the rock wall. The safe room itself was fine. Only three rooms, bathroom, bed room, and hybrid kitchen and living room that had a single couch. The couch and bed were nice, but Fenice just couldn’t figure out how to lay down now that they had WINGS all of a sudden. Ones that seemed to catch on fire when startled which resulted in the room smelling faintly of smoke and more than a few burn marks on the couch. They had been there for a couple weeks, but it felt both a lot shorter and a lot longer. Fortunately there were some books and songs they’d never heard of provided, and they were nice. But really Fenice was just waiting for the snake lady to get back and explain things. Though it looked like that won’t happen. After the ball-hair guy found the room and saw them, they barricaded themself in the bathroom and waited. After a few minutes they heard the entrance open again. “Huh. Not bad. Notice a distinct lack of people in here though.”
“I change my mind, put him to sleep too.” Fenice heard three sets of footsteps through the door. One was ball-hair guy, but they couldn’t guess the others.
“It won’t work with that mask in the way.”
“Then take it off, I don’t care!”
“Try it and I’m taking your hand.” Ok, the voice that sounds like a chimney was not on good terms with the other two. “And what’re you doing with Gabrielle?”
“We’re just going to search her first. She had that knife, who knows what else she’s got.”
“I’d advise against that. She’s very picky about that. Seriously, I tried to ask for a snack once and she looked at me like I said ‘Giovanni did nothing wrong’.” Wait. Hold the phone. Chimney knew who Giovanni was?!
“....... Stay in here and don’t cause trouble or I will Powder you.”
“Noted.” The door closed and there were some sounds of Chimney moving around. “‘Ello? Patient Zero? That your actual name, or what?” Fenice slowly opened the door to see who their new roommate was. He looked like he walked out of an explosion and was possibly the cause of it. Ashened hair, skin, voice, and charcoal gloves. And that mask... Was it meant to be scary or cheesy? The grin seemed to signify scary, but it was just so simple. “.... Do you understand this language?”
“I do.”
“Neat. So you are....” Chimney turned his head to the side and then the other. “... This. What. I’m sorry, but what the actual fuck? What are you?”
“Human. But I think that might not be the case given the wings.”
“You’re human, but also a Moltres. Neither of which should exist. And... Ok how do you pronounce your name. Fen-ice? Fe-niece?”
“Fe-niss. Like ‘miss’, wait how do you know that?”
“Ok. Have you heard of Beings? Capital b,” Beings, a race of super powered individuals with very long lifespans. And this guy was claiming to be one?....That would explain how he knew so much about them.
“I’ve read basically every story about them ever. Or what I could find, you’re a secretive bunch.”
“Sounds about right. Well I’m one. Got a mimicry power, and when I meet someone I get a small bio about them including name and power. And right now I see you are Fenice the Moltres who is also a human, and that’s the more important detail.” Chimney was throwing a lot and Fenice had trouble handling it all. He was a Being, and somehow believed they shouldn’t exist and they were also a Moltres?! Well that explained the new skin color, wings, and fire, but it was crazy. Then again not like anything had made sense recently.
“Before we get into that, can I get a name from you?”
“Oh, right, how rude. I am Freak,” Was he serious? “Yes,” ... Well.
“Freak.” He perked up as they said the name skeptically.
“Huh. You said it like a name. But one you’re uncertain of, but it seems that’s because you aren’t sure if I’m serious and don’t want to offend. Refreshing to hear it like that.”
“And um... Ok I have a million questions but this is an important one. Earlier you said the name Giovanni. I don’t know about you, but where I come from that name has a lot of baggage.”
“Yeah, Giovanni, former gym leader and head of Team Rocket. Read about him after he offed himself. Don’t know if I ever met him in life, but he had a lot of stuff happening.”
“Oh my- Oh my god. You know. YOU KNOW!”
“Uh, yeah, I do- Oh sweet Above, you know Giovanni.” There was a moment of silence as the two processed what they learned. “You’re from the world before.”
“And so are you- Wait before?”
“..... you don’t know....” Freak grew quiet, the excitement from his voice all gone.
“Know what?” Before he could answer, the door started to open and Fenice ran back into the bathroom. After a minute and a conversation drowned out by the countless thoughts going through their head there was a knock.
“They’re gone, probably will be for a while.... Come out I have a thing to tell you.” They opened the door and saw a new person who was unconscious on the couch. Her skin was pure white with blue and red triangles dotting her like freckles. Their hair was a similar white and had a large blue streak on the right side and a red one on the left. Most striking were the wings, taking up almost as much room as the person they were attached to with red and blue feathers spotted throughout. She was in bad shape, bleeding from a wound on the head and her left hand looked badly bruised. Her entire right arm was in a sort of brace that covered her entire arm, even her hand. For what reason Fenice couldn’t start to imagine.
“Who is she?”
“This is Elly, she’s a Togekiss.”
“...... You serious?”
“Yeah, here’s the thing. You know how earlier I said ‘the world before’?”
“Yes,” Fenice felt their stomach start to go into freefall from Freak’s tone.
“Now... Actually it’d be better if you see for yourself.” Freak moved to check on Elly. “... AHAHAHAHAHA!” The tone shift was jarring. “Oh sweet Above that’s hilarious.”
“What?”
“They took her pants, but didn’t want to leave her like that so they gave her pants from their uniform. Which means those guys just had a spare uniform. It’s great, I need to take a picture.” His mask made a sound like a phone camera. “There we go.”
“Why’d they take her pants?”
“I’m guessing it was easier than emptying her pockets. She had a lot, you have no idea.”
“Ok, but can we get back to the Togekiss bit?”
“Oh right. Have you heard of Gijinka?”
“Humanoid Pokemon, yeah those were some weird fics.”
“Well they’re real now.”
“What-”
“Later, ok? It’s... It’s going to be a long story.” Elly stirred and let out a moan. Freak walked over and sat in front of her. For the first time Fenice notices his arms are bound. They thought he was just crossing his arms the whole time. “Hey you, you’re finally awake.” DID HE JUST-
“........ what happened?” She croaked out.
“Uh, you got hit by a bunch of rocks by a Rhyperior, then got sleep powdered by a Jumpluff,” Freak quickly listed off. “They moved us here, took your stuff, including pants, secured your right arm in a brace that doesn’t give you access to the power glove, and I met... them.”
“Them?”
“Singular.”
“.... Ok who-” Elly tried to push herself up, but fell back down, still waking up from the powder. Fenice slowly approached and crouched down in front of her.
“Um... Hello. My name is Fenice.”
“.... Hi. I’m Elly.”
“Yeah Freak said earlier.” Elly’s eyes opened wide in surprise, then she shifted her gaze to Freak who waved innocently.
“Ok... Fenice, what do you know about those suits?”
“Nothing, they haven’t said anything to me. I was already here and they found me, and a little while later you two were thrown in.” Elly sighed in frustration.
“..... Ok that’s fine, don’t worry about it,” She sat up and wiped the blood off her face. “Ok first things first, we need to get my stuff back, or at least the knife.”
“Then we cut the brace off and you let me use my powers.” She gave Freak a cold look, but didn’t object outright.
“If it comes to that, then fine, but only as a last resort.”
“Oh come on, it’s not that hard. You give me a power and I’ll just do a mind trick,” He waved his hand in an arc, “These are not the Gijinka you are looking for.”
“.... Did.... Does he usually make references like those?”
“Refren- Those stupid quips? Do you actually understand them?”
"Yyyes." Elly blinked and slowly turned to Freak.
"You're going to say more aren't you?"
“I’ve been so lonely! No one understands me, and finally I’ve met someone who does!”
“Jury’s still out on that, really,” Fenice commented. Freak held a hand to his chest in mock hurt. “But um... Should I be concerned about the fact that his arms are bound?”
“Did you not tell them?” Elly asked Freak.
“I believed it would cause more problems and currently we don’t need those if we want to get out of this one.”
“.... Ok, fine. Fenice we’ll explain more once we’re outside, but for now just trust that we know what we’re doing,” Elly stood up then fell right back down. “Fuck.”
“Is it the head wound?”
“Yeah, possible concussion and various other injuries don’t mix,” She held up her bruised left hand. “How’s your combat experience? I can hit with my right arm fine, but can’t grab and my right leg is injured too. Freak’s arms are stuck, so you’re in the best condition to fight.”
“Uh... None? Fighting isn’t something I typically do. The most physical activity I usually get is carrying around my school books.”
“You can’t use any moves?” Freak asked, head tilted.
“Well, no, I mean... Sort of? I shot fire out of my hands once a couple days back, but I don’t think I can do it on command.” The incident had been after they had a nightmare with a flash of light and then being in an operating room table unable to move, but fully aware of what was around them.
“..... Ok, think I know what to do,” Freak scooted over to Fenice’s side. “You’ve done it before, so your body knows how to, but you haven’t quite figured out the psychological aspect of it, so let’s work on that real quick. Close your eyes and put your hands close, not touching though.”
“Freak what are you-”
“Elly, quiet for a bit, I need to see if this works first.” Elly opened her mouth, but closed it. Freak was dead set on whatever he was planning. Fenice closed their eyes and held their hands close together. “Now focus. Do you feel the heat coming from them?”
“Yyyes. A bit.” They could feel the space between their hands slowly heat up due to their body temperature.
“Ok now imagine that heat coming from you. Try to visualize it in your mind, the heat coming from your hands into the air,” Fenice pictured in their head the red heat from their hands transferring to the air around them. “Now picture the speed increasing. Have the heat flowing faster, but not too fast. Contain it in one area between your hands.” They imagined the heat collecting in a sphere in the gap, and something about that image seemed familiar.
“.... Am I practicing a Kamehameha?”
“More Rasengan. Trust me, it applies incredibly well.” Having a reference like that helped a lot more than Fenice would admit. They focused and tried to condense the heat following some unknown instinct they had. “There we go.”
“How did that work?” Elly asked in disbelief. Fenice opened an eye and saw a flame in their hands. It was only a bit bigger than a golf ball, but the fact that they had even produced.
“Oh my god, it worked,” They tried to control the flame and sent it upwards in a short burst. Automatically they knew they had used a move. “Ember”
“Correct,” Freak jumped up and started to pace. “Your other moves are Wing Attack, Sky Attack, and most importantly, Heat Wave. Currently you’re working on instinct, so you don’t have the best control, but if you can use Heat Wave, even just a bit, we can get out of here.”
“You have a plan? Already?” Elly sounded incredibly skeptical. “And you honestly think I’ll follow along?”
“Gabrielle, you don’t have much choice if you want the big fuck off knife back.”
“I think we should listen first,” Fenice suggested, ignoring the look Elly was giving them. “His fire lesson worked, so maybe it’s worth hearing him out?”
“.... Ok fine. Freak what’ve you got?”
“Alright so what we need to do first is-” Fenice leaned in and listened closely to the Being’s plan. If this worked, they could finally see the outside, and figure out what happened to the world.

Data Log

I am reasonably certain Lysandre is irritated. He has gone through five training partners and twice as many punching bags. He even managed to bend the barbell while bench pressing into a shape I didn’t know was possible to form. Expenses are going to be a nightmare to explain.
I haven’t heard back from the grunts I dispatched to Glittering Cave. So either they’re still working, or something has happened that caused them to become sidetracked. I’m not entirely certain on what could be keeping-

Hello, late arrival Specs is here! I really enjoy Freak, to echo the previous comments. In this most recent update, I loved 'the big fuck off knife'. I also love picturing Lysandre demolishing gym equipment. Quite expensive indeed!

Oooh, the mysteries pile on to each other. I like how Freak's alien knowledge reads like he's directly breaking the fourth wall without actually acknowledging that he's doing so; I'm kind of curious as to where you're going with that. The stuff with 'the world before' implies a hidden backstory that I'm sure is gonna be important as the journey goes on. I kind of fell behind on this fic for a while, but I'm back now and loving it!

June update tiiiiiiiiiime
Also replies, neat

@Spectacles 'ello friend and welcome
Happy to see Freak is accomplishing his prime objective
I rather like the little logs at the end. The writer can both monologue about how he's gonna kill everyone but also worry about expenses
It's a fun contrast

@Trollkitten That sounds about right
The fourth wall is intact, but Freak is determined to make sure the memes of ancient past continue to live on
And yes backstory will come. It'll be fun.

Fun fact
This and the last chapter were meant to be one chapter but it got too long
So here it is now

Elly hated to admit it, but Freak’s plan was actually sound. The only problem was that the lynchpin was this.... Moltres, Fenice. Their skin was a light pink and seemed to sparkle a bit. They had red, yellow, and orange feathers and hair that shifted patterns when they moved, like it was an actual flame. She still wasn’t sure what a Moltres was, but if they were a Fire type that’s fine. But they looked frail, like they haven’t gotten any proper exercise in months, and only just learned how to use their fire. Yes, Freak seemed to be a good teacher, Fenice already seemed to get the basic handle on how Heat Wave worked, but they were still just learning. They definitely weren’t used to having wings, they seemed unused to the extra weight on their back and sometimes leaned forward to balance out.
“Alright team, everyone sure on their roles?” Freak was pretty eager to start this escape. How convenient that his plan meant he was in no danger, just herself and Fenice had to risk harm. Well that was a bit unfair, his powers were sealed so he was about as much use as Swift Swim during Sunny Day. “Gabrielle, you good to move?” She flexed her left hand to see if she could still attack with it. It hurt, but nothing that’ll stop her from doing her part. Head still hurt like a bitch, but at least she wasn’t collapsing anymore.
“I’m set. This better work, or I’m using you as ballistics.”
“Noted. Fenice?” Freak turned to Fenice and they were sitting on the floor very much trying to not panic.
“Yeah, no, I’m fine, just, you know, my thing is kinda central to this entire plot so-”
“Fenice. Calm down,” Freak crouched down next to them. “Most of it is reflex, just make the flame and think about what you need it to do, and it’ll respond. It doesn’t need to be powerful, it just needs to make them flinch. We’re not looking for a brawl, just to get a good enough lead so we can book it out of here.”
“Are you really avoiding a fight?” Elly called out. “You?”
“Gabrielle if I had access to any of my powers, we would already have left. But since your arm is a bit too secure for that, it’s a sacrifice I am willing to make.”
“Oh right it’s your sacrifice. You’re letting us fight instead of you.”
“I am selfless like that.” He held up his false arm. “And I am going to be in front of you specifically so I can use this to block rocks.”
“And what about Fenice?”
"Suits won’t risk hurting them. They’re the reason the suits are here to start with.”
“Um.” Fenice was standing by the entrance door. “I think I hear them coming back.” Freak shot to his feet and pulled on Elly’s arm to get her up.
“Ok, then we gotta move now. Get your flame ready and then open the door.” They nodded and grabbed the doorknob. Flame in hand, they opened it and stepped through.
“We’ll message him when we get back to town, but we need to secure Patient Zero firs-” The Rhyperior’s voice stopped. Elly and Freak moved to be right at the door, but didn’t step through just yet.
“Hey there, fella. Whaddya doin’ with that flame, eh? Ya might hurt someone with it.” That must’ve been the Jumpluff. If he got too close it would be over. The flame in Fenice’s hand grew larger in response. “Uh... Ya hear me didn’t ya?”
“Yeah. And that’s kinda the point,” They thrust their hand forward and a wall of flame burst forth.
“GO GO GO!” Freak shouted and pulled Elly behind of him. The Jumpluff was rolling on the floor in pain, but the Rhyperior was recovering already from the shock and grabbed Freak.
“You’re not going anywhere!” The rock type shouted.
“Counter point,” Rather than fight the pull, Freak let himself get dragged over. Elly turned to make sure Fenice was out of the side passage and heard an impact and a high pitched sound. A second later Freak was behind her again and the Rhyperior was on the floor holding his...
“Did you hit him-?”
“This is an escape, I don’t have time to play fair.” The two ran to catch up with Fenice and found them breathing heavily back in the open room where the suits first were with the oil lamp back on.
“Did I... I didn’t mean for it to be so strong... Is the ball-hair guy still... you know?”
“He’s only a bit burned,” Freak reassured them. “But we really need to go.”
“Yeah ok... I just.... Need a…” They leaned on the wall then started to slide down. “i’m so tired.”
“I also still need my stuff.” Elly pointed out. “We only have another minute or two before the suits get back up and- Hold on.” She noticed that the minecart that had been tipped over before was now upright. She picked up the oil lamp and used it to look in, she saw her bag, pants, and knife along with the rest of the spare uniform that she had the pants of. “Put Fenice in this, we’re going to try and wheel it out of here.”
“Will need some help. Hands are literally tied.” He held up his cuffed arms. “I can push but lifting requires an assist.”
“Right, grab their left side,” Together they got Fenice, now unconscious, in the cart and started to push them to the other exit.
“Take out the ceiling,” Freak directed while he pushed. “Not sure if it’ll stop them, but we need every second we can.” Elly wanted to argue on reflex, but he was right, even slowing those suits down a little could save them. She charged an Aura Sphere and blasted the first entrance, caving it. The Rhyperior could probably plow right through it, but it would take a bit of time. She did the same to the threshold that her group left through, leaving Freak’s mask as the only light source. “This is going to be a joy to explain.”
“It’s not that difficult. Suits attacked us-”
“Attacked you,” He emphasized, “I didn’t fight so they didn’t really hurt me, which is going to be incredibly suspicious.”
“Your cuffs are active, no one will think you managed to injure me.”
“And what’s the rest of our story again?”
“After knocking me out, they shoved us into a secret room where we met Fenice and now I’m seeing where you’re going with this.” Even with Elly backing Freak up, the situation still sounded unbelievable. Fenice was a type of Gijinka that didn't exist, they didn’t seem to know anything about their own abilities, and they were in a room hidden in a cave found by people in red suits and hi-tech sunglasses. Add a possible concussion to the mix, and the case was rather flimsy. The main evidence was the brace, but that wasn’t exactly hard evidence of a possible organized group with a secret agenda. There was also the spare suit, but like that was going to convince anyone... Unless. “Stop pushing for a sec, I need to check something.” Freak complied and Elly looked into the cart again and felt around the bottom of the cart, trying to not disturb Fenice, and felt something under the suit. She pulled it out and saw that it was a pair of sunglasses. She put them on and-
RETINAL SCAN FALSE.
“OW!” She took them off after the red letters seared themselves into her eyes.
“What?” Freak took the glasses from her and put them on. “Huh nothing... Wait.”
“They need a retinal scan to work, which I didn’t match and you don’t provide,” She snatched them away from him and tossed them back into the cart. “But it’ll help us out more than a story and some scarlet pants.”
“Neat. I’m still gonna get detained, but at least we have that.”
“Yeah, you’re absolutely going to be put in solitary for the night. Don’t quip at anyone, they’re only following protocol.”
“I will quip as I please, Gabrielle.” She didn’t bother to respond to that with anything other than a sigh. The rest of the trip through the caves was silent. Elly listened for any sign of the suits following them, trying to not let Freak’s shifting eyebeams distract her too much. After what felt like hours the exit appeared, moonlight from outside shining in.
“Mmnph,” Fenice blinked awake. “Did we get out?”
“Yep. Welcome to the outside world, little one.” Freak said as he helped them out of the cart and they looked around to take in the surroundings. They looked around them and stopped onve they looked up and studied the sky for a minute.
“This is... What... I don’t understand.” They spun around while still looking up. “No this can’t be right.”
“What?” Elly studied the sky trying to find whatever Fenice seemed to think was wrong. “Was there a meteor or something.”
“I swear if this one brings another alien I’m leaving the planet,” Freak said. Elly couldn’t tell if he was speaking from experience or not.
“No it’s... Everything’s off. All the stars are off. Not by much, but by enough to notice,” Fenice looked to Freak. “You know. I know you know. What made the stars change?”
“Oh that’s simple. Time.”
“... You serious?”
“I don’t lie, Fenice,” He tipped over the minecart, spilling the stuff inside on the ground, and sat on it..
“Hey!” Elly picked up her stuff and the uniform. “Why?”
“Because I want to be sitting for this.” Freak looked up at the sky as well and let out a long breath. “Fenice, remember what I said earlier? About where you were from?”
“Yeah, ‘the world before’. What does that mean?”
“It means you’re from the past. Something happened that wiped out all life on the planet, except me. And now you.” Freak leaned forward and looked Fenice in the eye. “We are of the few survivors of a planetary genocide that wiped out humans and Pokemon alike. The only things left are buildings that have stood the test of time. Of course, not that many are left, but why would there be? After all....
“It was three thousand years ago.”

With that said he leaned back. Fenice hadn’t responded for a bit. Did their brain crash? Well, it was a bit of a pill to swallow, and it was only more believable for him because he actually lived through the three thousand. Most of it anyway.
“I....” Ok, they hadn’t gotten a blue screen. “.... I hate that that makes sense.”
“WHAT!?” Gabrielle wasn’t going to be understanding anytime soon, but that was expected. “He just said you lived three thousand years ago, and you just believe him?!”
“Well what other explanation is there?! The stars are wrong, I have no idea where or what I even am now, and you and apparently everyone here is a blend of human and Pokemon, so what else could be the answer? Something happened three thousand years ago and since then I’ve been in a coma and only woke up because the tall snake lady pulled me out of it and hid me here.” Tall snake lady? .... oh no. "i feel like i should be freaking out more than i am-"
“Fffffffffffffffffuck.”
“What? What is it?”
“You said tall snake lady, right?” Gabrielle was figuring it out too.
“Yeah, why?” Fenice looked between him and Gabrielle, and he answered before she could try to prolonge what'll be a very
“..... She’s dead and right now I’m the main suspect in her death.” Aaaand there’s the fear. “I would like to state I didn’t do it, but I think I have an idea of who did.”
“Freak-”
“Not now Gabrielle.”
“FREAK! Look at them!” Oh right. Horror. Fenice was in shock at the revelation, should’ve thought of that. “Don’t you know anything about tact? Don’t you know what news like that does to someone?”
“Nope.”
“Of course you don’t.”
“Gabrielle, I don’t remember people who die, so no, I don’t know. When people die others get to mourn, to find solace in others as they remember the person who passed. I don’t get that. You can show me pictures of the person, tapes of their voice, and the dead body itself and that will trigger nothing. The dead are nothing to me. So right now, what is more important is that we just learned that the Seviper who died also freed Fenice and hid them.”
“... she’s dead..?” Dealing with that later.
“Let’s also consider that the suits seemed to have an idea of who Fenice was, so they possibly worked for whoever kept them in a coma to begin with. And if the Seviper had access to Fenice then it’s incredibly likely she also worked for the same person and why aren’t you listening?” Fenice was crouched on the ground mumbling to themselves about it being their fault or something and Gabrielle was next to them trying to provide comfort. He tried to get closer to the two, but Gabrielle spread her wings and used them to form a little dome over herself and Fenice. Ok, fine, just ignore him. Nothing he wasn’t used to. Not like he just figured out something very important to the murder he was being accused of. Only thing to do was sit and wait for them to stand so then he could go get thrown into a cell.
“She died because she broke me out.”
“It had to have been a risk she knew and was willing to take.”
“But she didn’t even know me, why would she help me?”
“.... Some people are just that good.” That conversation wasn’t ending anytime soon, so internal monologue it is. Seviper knew about the secret room and those suits had an idea it existed, so they probably worked for the same person. Seviper worked for Lysandroth so there’s a non-zero chance that the suits work under him. Don’t think that’s likely since the suits might also work for the one who killed the Seviper in the first place.... So not direct, but adjacent at the very least.... Lysandroth’s rage was genuine, so if someone working for him had a hand in the murder he didn’t know who it was. What did the Seviper do anyway? To make a better guess he needed to know what her job was and her position in Lysandroth’s company. And where would the person who held Fenice be working? Whoever put them in a coma had to have been around in the before times as well, so who could that possibly be? ........ Well there was an option. One option. One singular fucking sole option. Maybe it was finally time to seek out his majesty.
“Freak.” Gabrielle had finally finished her pep talk and stood in front of him. Fenice was sniffling, and didn’t look at him, but were at least on their feet again. “We’re moving. It’s late and Fenice and I need to rest.”
“Aaaand also get that brace off?” No response to that. Gabrielle stuffed her pants and the red suit into her bag and threw it over her shoulder. “So just walking then?”
“Yes. Now move.” He passed Fenice as he took the lead. They opened their mouth but closed it without saying anything. If they have a question he’ll answer, but it looked like that wasn’t happening tonight. He turned on the mask’s high beams and led them through the night.

Fenice desperately wanted to ask Freak more about.... Well everything. Three thousand years they’ve been asleep, and he was present throughout all of it. What does he know about whatever happened?! They tried to organize their thoughts into a coherent set of questions to ask. Maybe there was a place to get a notepad in town. By the time they got there most of the shops were closed and Elly led them to a black building with a logo of a Pokeball with what looked to be a Mega Absol’s horns and wings sprouting out of it. Wait, how did Mega Evolution work? What does that even look like with Gijinka? Fenice really wanted that note pad. As soon as they entered and the person at the front desk saw Elly, he picked up a phone and started calling for medical attention and security. A few moments later and the two groups showed up. Nurses forced Elly onto a stretcher and security guards picked Freak up and carried him away. Fenice was left alone for a bit, but decided to try and follow the medical team.
Elly’s injuries got a lot of attention considering they weren’t that severe. Fenice got to stay in the room with her, but was pushed aside by the many nurses hooking her up to several machines. Some took notice of them, but mostly focused on the condition of the Togekiss. Fenice heard some shouting from outside the room and soon the door burst open and everyone got out of the way of a dark skinned woman with navy blue hair and.... wings. “Oh Arceus, Elly are you ok? What happened? Who did this?”
“Hey, Malva. Trust me it looks a lot worse than it is.”
“You got hit with three separate Rock attacks, one on the head, and your left hand is a mess. You’re tough, but even you have a limit.” Fenice guessed type advantages still applied to Gijinka.
“Wait, so does the metal in the needles hurt you more or....” They trailed off when Malva’s attention shifted onto them and they became aware how out of place they were.
“I mean, they burn a bit, but nothing serious.” Elly answered. “Oh, uh, Malva, this is Fenice. I’ll explain how I met them later, it’s a very long story.”
“...... I’ll hold you to that, Elly dear, but right now there’s something else a bit more important that I need you to understand. You are Freak’s retainer. You are the League’s answer to anyone’s worry that he might get loose and kill again. So you suddenly show up hurt... It’s worrying to the execs. You’re lucky that it’s night and no one saw you in your worst state.”
“Most of it will be healed by tomorrow. And I can handle some press people trying to get a story.”
"Don't worry, Elly dear. No one's going to try and spin this against you," Fenice suddenly became aware Malva's very sharp fingernails were painted red. “Getting back around to our main topic, who did this to you? Did you see them?”
“Yeah, there were two. A Rhyperior and Jumpluff. They were in red suits and high tech sunglasses.” Malva tensed at that description. “Yeah, I know, you warned me about it before and I still got caught. I’m sorry.”
“No, no, you have nothing to apologize for.” She relaxed a bit and smoothed out some feathers on her wings. “Anything else of note?”
“We have a suit of theirs,” Fenice offered. They remembered seeing Elly pick the suit off the ground earlier.
“..... What?” Malva’s feathers ruffled again.
“Oh, they, uh, used a Sleep Powder on me and they took my pants off,” Fenice could feel Malva’s rage radiating off of her. “For whatever reason they had a spare uniform and put the pants of those on me and stored the rest of it with my stuff. We got a pair of their sunglasses too, but I don’t think they’d be of much use.”
“..... They took off your-” She took a moment to settle down. “Well that’s another charge the League could file against them when we catch those bastards.”
“Think they’ll let me take a crack at them first?”
“Oh no, that’d be a very bad look... So we’ll need to make sure no heads are turned your way for that.” Fenice remembered that in one language Dark type literally translated to ‘Evil type’ and Malva was certainly fitting that description right now. “Oh, sorry, Fenice. I came off a little intimidating there, didn’t I? Let me properly introduce myself; I am Malva of the Kalos Elite Four.”
“OH! Uh, wow, hi. You already know, but I’m Fenice. Nice to meet you,” Elite Fours were still a thing? That’s another thing for the notepad. They considered bowing, this was an E4 member after all, but she seemed a lot more relaxed then some of the other E4s Fenice knew of. They considered saying more, but Malva’s phone started to ring.
“Oh, damn it all, sorry Elly I need to go. You’ll be fine, right?”
“Yes! Go Malva, I don’t want to hold you up.” Elly waved for Malva to go and let out a sigh when she left.
“..... Elly can I ask you something?” This was something that Fenice had on their mind for a bit and they decided to commit to it.
“Yeah?”
“Let me travel with you and Freak, please.”
“That is a really bad idea.”
“Please! Freak is the only answer to my questions. Even if he doesn’t remember dead people, he can still give me something.”
“Fenice, he might have killed the person who freed you.”
“I... I don’t think so.”
“You really believe his story?”
“Well.... I haven’t really been around him much.... Has he lied to you about anything?” They sat as Elly failed to come up with a definite answer. “Look, even if he did, that doesn’t change that he is my only chance to learn what happened three.... thousand... years ago,” The full weight of all that time still hadn’t fully settled, and Fenice felt like it never would. “Please. I need to know what happened.”
“..... Let me sleep on it.”
“..... So that’s a ‘maybe’?”
“It’s a ‘I need to think about it more’. I can probably justify it though.” Elly let out a yawn. “I was serious about sleeping on it, you can ask up front for a temporary room, they’ll find one for you.”
“Oh, um, ok. Thanks.”
“No problem,” Elly waved them goodnight as they left the room. Even if Elly said no, they were still planning on following. Freak was the key to so much knowledge, and they’d be damned if they just let him escape.

Data Log

Where to begin.

Retrieval of Patient Zero was an utter failure, Malva is enraged beyond even Lysandre’s control, and Patient Zero has met Freak of all creatures. Fortunately no one has traced the grunt’s deployment back to me.
A couple Admins are probably going to find themselves demoted shortly.
Recovery of my lab’s cameras has been completed, thankfully. Not that the footage provides anything I haven’t since learned, but it’s a small comfort. For now development of the weapon is the highest priority. Theoretically I could fire it now, but I want to be thorough this time. No unwanted remains. In the meantime I can begin prep work for the next stage of my experiment. I need certain supplies, but that should be a simple matter. They’re nothing Lysandre can’t provide.

hello i am so sorry i keep forgetting to hit send on my comments lskdfhlsdjkf here you go!

“Is he always like this?” Viola asked, head turned to Freak, observing his mask display changing as he spoke.
“As far as I have experienced, yes.”
“Gabrielle, you haven’t even begun to get the full Freak experience.”
“.... Is that the wording you want to go with? Because I really want you to not have it be that.”
asjfkhsajfAFHJGF phrasing, Freak, phrasing
“Hm.”
“I am not letting you anywhere near it, understand?”
“Yes, mother dear.”
“.... Don’t ever call me that again.”
“Can I go with ‘Elly dear’?” Freak’s voice was a perfect mimic of Malva’s but in a tone that made Elly incredibly uncomfortable.
sdjfhsdkjfh go gettem Freak, allll the trolling

also like. the whiplash between that funny moment and the genuinely unnerving one of Freak's face? 10/10, really effective xD
They thought he was just crossing his arms the whole time. “Hey you, you’re finally awake.” DID HE JUST-
that moment when Fenice actually understands the references and memes Freak has omg xD poor bean, what a fate to be cursed with this knowledge also is Freak going to do the Loss meme at one point adasasdjks

also I love Fenice and I am here for this n-b rep and I care them xD a friend
“You have a plan? Already?” Elly sounded incredibly skeptical. “And you honestly think I’ll follow along?”
“Gabrielle, you don’t have much choice if you want the big fuck off knife back.”
the "fuck off knife" makes its appearance again and this phrase needs to be kept here for all time
I am reasonably certain Lysandre is irritated. He has gone through five training partners and twice as many punching bags. He even managed to bend the barbell while bench pressing into a shape I didn’t know was possible to form. Expenses are going to be a nightmare to explain.
Lysandre being a buff Pyroar actually works sdkjfhdsk ...okay that's not a phrase i thought i'd ever say in my life

asfkjshkj i mean it like - lions are meant to be tough and powerful, not the wimpy ones with 60 base attack that are in XY haha
Fenice. Their skin was a light pink and seemed to sparkle a bit. They had red, yellow, and orange feathers and hair that shifted patterns when they moved, like it was an actual flame. She still wasn’t sure what a Moltres was, but if they were a Fire type that’s fine. wait a Shiny Moltres too? who doesn't look like raw chicken? wonders will never cease xD
